1972 Plymouth Duster 340 Tribute

For consignment, a 1972 Plymouth Duster 340 tribute.  Here is a car with many performance, cosmetic, and functional upgrades or freshening and a long list of Mopar awards, including three times at Chryslers at Carlisle, a feature article in Mopar Collectors Guide, a Mopar Nationals class win, 8 Mopar Atlantic Nationals wins, a Chryslers at Carlisle T-building invitational participant, 3 National Chrysler Products Clubs Nationals wins including 1 Best Of Show and 1 Prestige award, 3 AACA regional show wins, and 4 Mopar Heritage Society regional wins alongs with a slew of other awards and show wins to illustrate it's excellence and reward the fine work that went into building this Duster.  Let's delve into the inner workings of this A-body out of the Mopar Rapid Transit System that is now racing through our Hallowed Halls.

Exterior
Two stage Electric Blue, (a 1993 Chrysler color), covers the car and is sportified by a body length white stripe on the shoulder line, terminating with the 340 decal.  This miles deep paint has been applied over a mix of both new and and the finest donor sheet metal that was sourced both locally and nationally and things are looking fine and dandy.  A snorkel type functional hood scoop tops the hood which is held in place with hood pins.  The shark's tooth grille is original and not a reproduction according to the consignor, and the marker lights creatively fill three of the teeth on each side.  The epic stacked slit taillights are surrounded by white stripes augmented by the Duster logo decal. 14-inch Mopar rally wheels, (14x6 up front and 14x9 in the rear), occupy each corner, all looking good.

Interior
The outside meets the inside with vivid white vinyl door panels surrounded by body colored top and bottom.  The split bench seats in white vinyl, are in excellent condition and front passengers are secured with 3-inch racing lap harnesses.  The rear bench, which also includes the nickel inlay detail, looks untouched.  A Grant GT steering wheel veers from the color scheme with its wood rim and triple spokes and shares the column with a large Autogage tachometer.  The wood trimmed dash is relatively basic and surrounded by a body color blue dash surround.  Liquid filled AutoMeter Water temp and oil pressure gauges have been added and are mounted under the dash.  A Blaupunkt head unit provides the tune with AM/FM/Cassette.  On the floor we find a Hurst Quarter Stick shifter surrounded by blue loop style carpet while the blue perforated headliner looks great.  The trunk is lined with a gray carpet mat and is clean.

Drivetrain
A period correct 340ci V8 is under the pins and is equipped with 11.:1 compression TRW pistons with Speed Pro rings and a Mopar Performance .484 lift cam.  The Holley 750cfm 4-barrel sits on an Edlebrock Torker II intake manifold and gases escape through Jet-Hot coated Hooker headers.  The 340 cylinder heads have been rebuilt with new valves, hardened seats and a 3 angle valve job was performed.  An A727 Torqueflite 3-speed automatic transmission with an external cooler, deep sump pan, and B&M shift kit sends power to the 8.75” rear with 3.23 SureGrip gears and Mark Williams axles, (a 489 carrier with 3.91 gears and SureGrip is included).   Disc brakes with single piston calipers occupy the front while 11x2.5" drums are in the rear.  The engine bay of course is show quality, incredibly clean and showing lots of polished metal and our consignor notes that the drivetrain has logged 10,000 trouble free miles.  Other detailed notes on the drivetrain include information that this potent combo was rebuilt and installed by noted Mopar Super Stock factory backed racer Ken Montgomery Sr. 

Undercarriage
Not unexpectedly, the underside is spotless.  The 2.5” exhaust flows from the headers to meet a cross pipe and then two Flowmaster mufflers before exiting in the back via chrome oval exhaust tips.  Mopar Performance torsion bars are up front with Mopar Performance Super Stock springs in the rear.  The undercarriage is clean and dry and includes powder coated frame connectors that undoubtedly add some stiffness.

Drive-Ability
It's not everyday you get to drive a 3-time Chrysler at Carlisle winner so naturally we babied it out of the garage and gently eased the throttle pedal forward.  Melodic sounds came from the exhaust and the engine had plenty of power.  No issues with the ride, the brakes, or the functional items.  We did note, however, that the horn didn't toot nor did the heater blower blow.
 
Here's a wonderful showcase of a Mopar tribute done right.  Fantastically clean and of course, well sorted, this is one that would be more than welcome to Mopar only events as well as just about anywhere where the audience appreciates clean, well built cars.  Stem to stern, this car has been improved.  It's only missing a new home.
