Description

1971 Chevrolet Chevelle SS Coupe

The storied Chevelle is one of those timeless designs that looks good no matter how it's built. Stock, modified, race, pro-touring, whatever; the clean lines and balanced stance on these tough classics create a confident swagger that's universally admired. That means, if you're looking to ride in style, you really can't go wrong with a Chevrolet A-Body. And when you factor in this ride's big block drivetrain, tastefully restored interior and first rate, all-American sheet metal, you get the picturesque profile of an incredible muscle car!

For consignment, the Chevrolet Chevelle SS Coupe. This car has been the beneficiary of an engine rebuilt in 2001. Prior to this it was used and owned by a traveling repairman who changed the oil and did all maintenance up to 210,000 miles. An engine rebuild took place at the 203,000 mile marker, and the maintenance continued. A complete restoration was done in 2001 by the consigner, and enjoyed ever since.

Exterior
For 1971, the face-lifted Chevelle moved an impressive 634K units. Not only did that high-profile success earn GM big money, it also solidified the nameplate as part of Chevy's oft romanticized 'golden era'. At the front of this coupe, a split grille hangs a prominent “SS” emblem between stainless-trimmed T3 headlights and an original rechromed bumper. Opposite that bumper, a domed Super Sport black striped hood leads the eye to fresh glass that's seated in original stainless frames. On top is a pristine black vinyl top which stops the stripes and just is pure black, which is a nice contrast to the silver otherwise. At the base of those glass frames, chrome door handles, a chrome driver's mirror and white-tinged “SS” badges complement correct 5 spoke Cragar Style Chevrolet SS wheels wrapped in raised white letter tires. And at the back of the car, a second original, rechromed bumper hangs a standard Super Sport inlay. All bathed in Nevada Silver respray and wide black stripes racing up the middle of the hood and trunk lid.

Interior
Its correct combination of bench and bucket seats that are firm to the touch, encased in black vinyl, original belts, and high backs. In front of those seats, a straight Super Sport dash frames new inserted OEM gauges clean and pristine provide all the telemetry you'll need for those hot laps. Below that dash, black carpet floats an original, re-chromed shifter that would make an airline pilot proud, and this is inside a correct console and color-keyed floor mats. At the sides of that carpet, door panels center classy stainless trim and requisite “SS” emblems on bright handles and supple, comfortable armrests. In front of the driver the steering wheel atop a black column. And behind the passengers, the car's fully restored trunk is finished with a correct jack and full-size spare tire. Headliner is nice and tight and is also black, and where the shoulder belts hang.

Drivetrain
Gaze into the satin black engine bay and you'll find a numbers matching 350ci V8 L48 mill. As described earlier it underwent a total rebuild at the 203K mile marker. On top is a 4-barrel carburetor and on the back is a TH350 3-speed automatic. The rear axle weighs in at 12 bolts and 2.73 gears. A nicely painted Orange/Red GM block and valve coverings can be seen amidst some black painted bolt ons with a nice patina of age.

Undercarriage
Well cared for showing aging gracefully, would be the buzzword for the undercarriage, with clean suspension, surface rust free floor pans with some leftover undercoating, and straight rust free rockers. Independent coil springs and 4 link with coil springs are on for the suspension, and power disc brakes for the front, and power drums for the rear. Noted the exhaust may have a leak.

Drive-Ability
Our muscle car aficionado snapped up this test drive, and when he returned he just had a smile on his face and 2 thumbs up, so it must have been good! He reported nice acceleration, smooth shifting, good cornering and all the positive essentials were working swimmingly. Overall it was very happy motoring. He did note the radio was inoperable, the clock did not tick and the HVAC blower had been disconnected.

A very nice example, ready to go and show with a simple turn of a key. No wrenching, no bodywork, no fuss no muss, just pure SS excitement and enjoyment all while looking just fab!
