Description

1967 Chevrolet Camaro Convertible

In 1966 Chevrolet conceived a totally new platform car for 1967 to be named Camaro, from a slang French word meaning “friend.” Chevrolet was getting beat out of many sales with the bad publicity that came from the Corvair, as well as the popularity of the Mustang. The Camaro was deemed a “pony” car, (meaning long front hood, and short rear deck, with power). This new car was offered in many platforms for the largest appeal to a wide audience, from basic to a race car and definitely escalated Chevrolet sales, and created a classic.

For consignment, a decent Camaro from 1967. Viper Blue paint, a black convertible top and a black interior make a striking color combo. Throw down the convertible top and let's go for a cruise. Our consignor has a slew of extra parts that come with this car which include touch up paint, a factory assembly manual, a SS rear tail panel, a carburetor kit, a new top assembly, passenger seat upholstery, and a passenger side door panel.

Exterior
The original Granada Gold has been sprayed over with what is now a stunning Viper Blue which shows some chips and dirt. Steel panels are good with gaps showing the need for adjustment. A steel cowl induction hood sits between the two fenders and allows for hot air to exit the engine bay. Moving toward the all black egg crate grill which has integral parking lights on the outer edges just before ending at the single headlights things are looking muscly. The badging, brite-work and trim chrome appears in good condition. Chevrolet Rally wheels are on all 4 corners. A black canvas convertible top shows some wear and repairs done with black tape. This top has a plastic rear window which is becoming cloudy and shows a tear repaired with clear tape. The trim around the base of the convertible top is missing and is starting to show some rust bubbling. We note that there is rust thru in the top of the windshield frame chrome trim which may go deeper into the substructure. Also noted is the windshield and its frame drop down a bit when the passenger door is opened. This possibly denotes some hidden invasive rust in the cowling and windshield frame.

Interior
A swing of the vinyl covered door panels, reveals what appear to be the original black vinyl bucket seats in very nice condition. These flank a center console, with a glove box, and Hurst shifter which sits in the center of a black textured plastic insert into the console. The dash is original and unrestored and it looks clean. The iconic deep round gauges front an original steering wheel, the area for the radio is open to your imagination and a trio of aftermarket gauges hang below. The top front of the dash is padded for safety and the metal section of the dash at the base of the windshield has heavy invasive rust in the center. Black carpet in good but slightly soiled condition floods the floor.

Drivetrain
Opening the menacing cowl induction hood we are greeted with a slightly dirty engine bay complete with a Chevrolet orange painted 283ci V8 that has within an Isky 201 camshaft. This is topped with an aluminum intake manifold, a rebuilt 600cfm Holley carburetor, and a shiny chrome air cleaner assembly. Chrome Moroso valve covers give some extra bling to the bay. A Muncie M21 4-speed manual transmission with a 10.5" clutch is on the back and sends power to a 3.08 geared 10-bolt rear axle.

Undercarriage
Independent front suspension, and rear leaf springs are seen underneath along with power front disc brakes and power rear drums. The overall presentation of the unibody and flooring is good and rust free with only minor surface rusting of the usual areas. 2 minor areas of concern are the passenger rear inner quarter panel and the rocker to floor seam at front of the driver's side with both of these areas showing the beginnings of invasive rust. Headers are on and send spent fossils out via a dual exhaust system with turbo mufflers.

Drivability
This car started right up and ran great. It had nice power, a great sound, and handled well on our test course. The original seats are still comfortable and it's a blast to row the gears with the top down. We did notice that the power top functions to put the canvas down but does not work to put it back up. All in all, a nice driver.

A mostly solid 1st year 1st generation Camaro with the top that goes down. You know what is said, when the top goes down the price goes up. This car is appropriately priced, looks great, puts a smile on your face and gets tons of thumbs up. While it does need some possible repair to the cowl/firewall area it's still a blast to drive. Hurry up and visit us at the Classic Auto Mall, this drop top piece of Detroit muscle won't last.
