Chevelle SS Hardtop

Description

1970 Chevrolet Chevelle SS Hardtop

For consignment, a 1970 Chevelle that doesn't share many things with Mr. Bon Jovi's and this certainly has never been in his stable...it's a fully built super clean Pro Street machine in true SS396 Chevelle clothing and the build sheet is there to back up that statement.  It's got all the racing goodies and monster 22.5-inch tires in the back that are almost cartoonish in their awesomeness.  Oh sure, you could spend years building one of these, or stop into the mall and start racing next week!

Exterior
Cranberry Red and with black stripes adorn this Chevelle and it looks very nice, just the way the build sheet reads for the car in box 44.  A fiberglass hood with a high cowl intake scoop lifts those black stripes up towards the windshield, while a painted red bumper takes the place of chrome.  The grille has been blackened and the chrome headlight bezels are retained.  The rest of the body is straight and standard A-body until you get to the back.  There you'll find a massive Ed Quay wing and a NHRA mandated battery cut off switch.  15-inch Weld wheels are not even close in width between the front and back.  The cavernous rear wheels go deep toward the center of the car while the front wheels are closer to what would have come on the car when new.  This car, as it sits could easily be entered into a car show and drop some jaws, however our consignor states that it's never been shown.  Sure the gaps are not perfect, perhaps from twisting off the line, but it's a great looking car even when it's not moving.

Interior
The Medium Saddle door panels are completely pedestrian and retain the tuck and roll pattern you'd find on a street car.  The armrests have been replaced with a metal plate because that bit of space was needed for the red roll cage installed in the car.  Procar by Scat racing seats in bright bright red occupy each side while a darker shade of plush red carpet covers the tubbed wells in back and the rest of the car.  RJS race harnesses are locked and loaded in the harness gaps.  The dash surround is standard Chevelle in saddle, while the custom gauge cluster and control panel is a nicely formed aluminum plate.  The steering wheel is wrapped in red leatherette and a Hurst ratchet race shifter is floor mounted in the center.  Look up and it's 1970 again because the perforated saddle headliner looks as it did when new.

Drivetrain
A consignor-stated 468ci motor with aluminum heads, a Holley Dominator 4-barrel carburetor and an Edelbrock Victor intake occupies the engine bay.  It's hooked to TH400 3-speed automatic with a manual valve body.  It heads back to the shortened rear axle with a Ford 9” differential.  The car is equipped with disc brakes front and rear to slow it down.  Appearance wise, the bay is very clean and tidy.  The black Chevrolet emblazoned valve covers stand out and the side walls are painted red and look great.

Undercarriage
The fuel cell is the prominent feature in the back along with the shortened rear axle and massive tires.  Braided lines abound underneath and the exhaust leaves from the headers and enters a pair of glasspack style straight mufflers then dump directly just before the rear differential under the car.  The required drivetrain safety loop is in place and everything is relatively dry and clean underneath.  We note coil springs up front and ladder bars with coil overs in back.

Drive-Ability
Always a big thrill when something this loud and powerful cranks up.  We did what we'll rightfully call a soft lap around the loop just to check functionality and I could barely hear myself think.  This brute wants to get up and go but we're going to coax it around the loop.  It's incredibly stable going straight.  There are not many cars in the mall that are going to feel this planted with those giant meats on the wheels.  It steers and stops well too, however the one flaw is that the reverse lights do not illuminate.

There are fat tired loud cars at car shows, and then there's that Pro Street car that shows up that suddenly makes us all feel like Prius drivers.  This car has big dig energy and a presence that will turn heads wherever it goes.  Grab this one while you can. “It's my life, it's now or never….”
