“The classic American muscle years were the best for the El Camino.” - Chevrolet El Camino retrospective, Chevy Hardcore website

The Chevy Hardcore website writers provided more of the El Camino's history: “The El Camino was introduced to the Chevy model line-up in 1959 as a competitor for the Ford Ranchero, only to be discontinued after the 1960 model year. But in 1964, Chevy brought back the model, this time based on the Chevelle rather than the Brookwood station wagon like the previous generation. The El Camino was a hit and stayed around until 1987, after Chevy changed the platform for the car to the Malibu in 1978.”

Offered here is an original, largely stock, performance-refreshed, 1971 El Camino in original light-tan over tan. The car's odometer shows 49.613 miles, a very low, roughly 1,000 miles per-year on average.

The El Camino's exterior paint retains an even, glossy, smooth finish across the entire car-pickup body. The front, single-headlight grille is stock. The entire cargo box is painted in the body color and shows minor wear from light use. All other body panels are free of damage. The original chrome bumpers are in well-preserved condition. Chrome trim on the body, including on the 73-inch-long cargo box top-edge trim and cabin-glass trim, has been similarly well maintained in very good condition. All badging—including the Chevrolet bowtie and name emblem in the grille, “El Camino” fender badges, and “Chevrolet” tailgate badge—remain mounted. Cabin glass and lighting lenses throughout are clear and uncracked. The El Camino features factory steel wheels (with “Chevrolet Motor Division”-branded full wheel covers) mounted with thin-whitewall tires.

The light-tan color theme continues on the largely stock and original interior. The bench seat is upholstered in vertically pleated tan vinyl in excellent condition. Door trim is a complementary ivory. The original Chevrolet-script steering wheel frames a horizontal, 120-mph speedometer, with HVAC slide-lever controls located to the right. The shifter for the automatic transmission is mounted on the steering column. A Road Gear® audio system has been mounted in place of the factory radio. Dashboard surfaces are in excellent condition overall.

Under the hood, the 350 cubic-inch Chevrolet V8, wearing correct orange engine-block paint, features added flair in the form of chrome embossed valve covers, performance headers, and chrome, Edelbrock®-embossed air-cleaner cover. The engine bay is clean with components properly installed with hoses and wiring correctly routed. Viewed from below, the chassis is complete, straight, and undamaged. The freshly installed, full-length, performance dual exhaust is a focal point.

The car's original data tag remains mounted, and its original owner's manual and Protect-o-Plate documentation is included

While the more than 130 high-definition photographs and the short walk-around-and-startup video available on the GarageKeptMotors website showcase this '71 El Camino in detail from every angle, including from below, we expect and encourage in-person inspections at our Grand Rapids, Michigan showroom. Please call to arrange an appointment in advance as our showroom is not open to the public. And feel free to get in touch anytime by phone or email if you have questions.

El Caminos were a consistent seller for Chevrolet, especially popular with ranchers in the Southwest. The combination of 3-passenger seating and 800-pound load capacity appealed to those who worked for a living, but wanted a comfortable vehicle that wasn't as “truck-y” as a pickup. Sound like you? This very original, performance-enhanced El Camino may be just your ticket.
