Frame Up Restored Cougar 302 V8 C4 Power Steering
If you love Ford power but long for something other than a Mustang, take a look at this 1968 Mercury Cougar. Born December 29, 1967 at FoMoCo's Dearborn, MI assembly plant, the car was originally delivered to the greater Atlanta area. The factory Lime Green Poly has been swapped for a sleek coat of bright red that does a great job of highlighting the Cougar's clean body lines. A black vinyl top breaks up the sea of red, mixing with clean trim and glass to create a great first impression. Under the hood, a 302ci V8 provides plenty of motivation thanks to the addition of an Edelbrock intake and Holley 4-barrel carburetor. A Mallory ignition system delivers spark while cast iron manifolds whisk exhaust gases out through a true dual exhaust system. Despite the upgrade, the bay stays true to its roots with pieces like correct decals and an Autolite Sta-Ful battery. Behind the 302, a Merc-O-Matic 3-speed automatic transmission spins power back to a Ford 8-inch rear end. The 111-inch wheelbase is supported by A-arms, coil springs, and articulated drag struts up front while leaf springs support the rear. Steering is power-assisted as is the braking system which clamps down on front discs and rear drums. Fifteen-inch Mercury wheels round out the package. Inside, a black vinyl interior offers a great place to spend time thanks to a air conditioning, a Pioneer stereo system and aftermarket pieces like the Grant steering wheel and column-mounted tachometer.
