Firebird Trans Am Tribute

Description

1982 Pontiac Firebird Trans Am Tribute

In the original Knight Rider series, the character of KITT, (Knight Industries Two Thousand), was physically embodied as a modified 1982 Pontiac Trans Am. KITT was designed by customizer Michael Scheffe.  The convertible and super pursuit KITTs were designed and built by George Barris.  According to the series, the original KITT's main cybernetic processor was first installed in a mainframe computer used by the US government in Washington, D.C.  However, Wilton saw better use for "him" in the Foundation's crime fighting crusade and eventually this AI system was installed in the vehicle.  KITT is an advanced supercomputer on wheels.  The "brain" of KITT is the Knight 2000 microprocessor, which is the centre of a "self aware" cybernetic logic module.  This allows KITT to think, learn, communicate and interact with humans.  He is also capable of independent thought and action.  He has an ego that is easy to bruise and displays a very sensitive, but kind and dryly humorous personality.  While our example for consignment can't jump, can't talk, doesn't self drive and has no turbo boost, it does comes to our Hallowed Halls with 9,220 non verifiable miles on the odometer, a new crate 305ci V8, an updated dash, rebuilt transmission, a well done repaint, new carburetor and a new HEI distributor.

Exterior
Looking pretty much like a mild mannered 1982 Firebird all bathed in newer black paint, things are looking great for this 1982.  With its neoprene body matching bumper and mild beak, the dual openings in the lower front grille and the thin black line created by the hood meeting the bumper that houses the signal lights add a menacing look.  The bottom of this car is encircled in copper tinted gold paint.  A long pony car hood with a thin rear facing scoop and hidden headlights with a Pontiac badge on the driver's headlight covering leads the way.  Door gaps are looking good and straight, as is all the rust free steel that is covering the car.  On the back a large curved greenhouse glass covers a storage area and a low profile spoiler is attached to the lid on the way back.  On the back panel are the ribbed tail lights with a matching horizontal ribbed red center trimming with the obligatory screaming chicken.  More copper tinted gold for the turbine style wheels which are wrapped by nearly new Hankook blackwall tires on all 4 corners.

Interior
A litany of puffy tuck and roll tan vinyl and molded plastic add ons makes up the door panels.  All else is black plastic and power windows and locks are seen within the door confines.  Moving inside, more tan for the vinyl seats in a warm hue with the driver's seat being power actuated.  Seats are in excellent condition, nice and tight, and no tears or soiling.  The updated to 1983 Trans Am black vinyl dash is showing off nicely and all readouts are in working order.  Seen between the buckets is a square and rectangle console with the shifter, a glovebox and a few toggles.  Near the center of the dash are some added in gauges for a tachometer, fuel and oil, battery charge and water temp.  Just below are the climate sliders, and below that is the factory AM/FM stereo.  Tan carpeting is on all the floors, and in back is a bucket seat 2 plus 2 seat setup.  The headliner is tan felting and is fairly tight above.

Drivetrain
Within the very clean and all buttoned up engine bay is a black painted block and chrome valve covered 305ci V8 and it's a newly installed crate engine.  A new 4-barrel carburetor is on top, and a rebuilt with new torque converter 700R4 4-speed automatic transmission is on back.  This pushes power to a 10 bolt rear axle.  Our consignor notes that a new HEI ignition has been installed along with a new water pump, aluminum radiator, belts, hoses, as well as a new fuel pump.
Undercarriage
Careful preservation has led to a very nice looking solid undercarriage with no rust.  Floor tubs, rockers and wheel wells are all clean and green.  Suspension is independent coil spring upfront, and torque arm with coil springs for the back.  Power disc brakes with new pads, calipers and rotors and on the front and power drums are in the back for the stopping power.

Drive-Ability
All worked just fine save for the power locks on this sweet retro ride.  Nice acceleration, good handling, and bias free panic stopping.  A fun driver for sure.  While Classic Auto Mall represents that these functions were working at the time of our test drive, we cannot guarantee these functions will be working at the time of your purchase.

Now showing with a new crate 305ci V8, new 4-barrel carb, rebuilt transmission, and vinyl interior this black and gold early 80's, (not oft seen), tribute to the Trans Am is an eye catcher and a performer.  TURBO BOOST!
