1968 Shelby GT500, Original Drivetrain, Fully Restored, Fully Documented!!!

Presented is the Iconic Shelby GT500 which underwent a two year nut and bolt restoration that was completed in early 2017 before being sent to Canepa for the finer details and final mechanical tuning.

The photo of the Marti Report indicates that of the 1,020 Fastback that were built for 1968, only 138 were finished in Candy Apple Red and that this particular one was 1 of 7 Ford Factory Cars.

The extensive photo book documents the restoration including the metal repair and body work. This GT500 was built April of 1968 and photos document the engine casting date of January 26th, 1968 which is consistent and indicates an original engine as VIN numbers were not stamped on the blocks until 1969.

The original intake manifold is included with the car, but was upgraded on the car with a Dual Quad Set-up.

About the Shelby GT500:

The Shelby Mustang is a high-performance variant of the Ford Mustang which was built by Shelby American from 1965 to 1967, and from 1968 to 1970 by Ford.

The 1967 Shelby G.T. 500 was the first model built in the Shelby G.T. 500 range. It is based on the 1967 Mustang and is equipped with a FE 428 cu in (7.0 L) Police-Interceptor V8 engine topped with an aluminum mid-rise intake and 2X4-barrel 600 CFM Holley carburetors producing 355 bhp (360 PS; 265 kW) at 5,400 rpm and 420 lb⋅ft (569 N⋅m) at 3200 rpm of torque.[24]

Documented plans to introduce a convertible mid-production year were shelved due to supply, production and financial problems that happened as soon as the first cars started to arrive at Shelby's Los Angeles facility in September. By October 1966, Ford took control over engineering and purchasing.[16] A.O. Smith was tapped to fix the fiberglass fitment and quality problems. Six months later, in May 1967, the decision was made to terminate the California-based Shelby operation. On August 18, 1967, a small staff, along with the remaining engineering cars, was sent to Ionia. The small staff of the newly formed Shelby Automotive, Inc. had substantially less involvement after this time.

The fastback coupes were available with either four-speed manual or three-speed automatic transmissions.

Outside, the GT500 featured a fiberglass nose and tail section, functional hood scoops, and four side air scoops. Inside, the GT500 featured trim borrowed from the Mustang GT, and included amenities like air conditioning, power steering, and a functional rear seat. Buyers responded, and the GT500 far outsold its small-block GT350 sibling.

For 1968, Ford replaced the previous 428 with the Cobra Jet 428, which featured larger valve heads, an intake manifold borrowed from the race-ready 427, and ram air induction, all aimed at pushing horsepower toward 400. All cars featured a padded rollbar, as well as interior upgrades such as woodgrain trim and unique gauges.
