Description

1984 Chevrolet Camaro Z28

For consignment, a 1984 Chevrolet Camaro Z28 with a title-verified 46,285 actual miles in a two tone coat of red over silver.  Our consignor kept it in the garage, venturing out on occasion to car shows, and even winning awards such as Best in Class at a big show held annually at Classic Auto Mall.  Maybe you had one in high school.  Or maybe your Dad drove one when you were little.  However it connects with you, this low mileage example can put you right back on the bucket seat and you can rejoin that “exclusive club” that Chevy touted in '84.

Exterior
More often than not, Brilliant Red was used as the press car during the introduction of the Third Gen Z28's, and this one also features the distinctive silver band rocker panel that encircles the car on body kit pieces that give the car a lean and low stance.  Deep set quad headlights front a hood that features a unique and now recognizable faux hood scoop stamped in and normally painted flat black.  In back, black trimmed three color tail lights are tucked under a streamlined wing and over a body colored bumper cover.  17-inch US Mag wheels carry 225/45R17 tires and add a bit of bling to the profile with its long hood and sloping, curving rear glass.  Imperfections include some chipped paint on the panel edges, silver paint following a poor masking job, and a scuff on the chin exposing the yellow Endura.    I

Mottled tan vinyl makes up the door panel, ribbed and sectioned and adorned with black plastic hardware and armrest, with the driver's panel slightly askew and the passenger's clean and tight.  Tweed cloth is surrounded by tan vinyl on the bucket seats which are sporty in an early-80's vintage, clean and intact with the driver's seat showing some compression.  As is common for F-bodies, the rear 2+2 seats look like they've never been used!  Time has taken its toll on the wrapped foam steering wheel, also a common malady, and has left it loose and wrinkled.  A simple instrument panel is housed in black plastic framing and includes a dual speedometer with mph and km/h, temp, fuel, battery, and an oil pressure gauge within the tachometer dial.  More angular black plastic frames the A/C controls and Delco AM/FM/Cassette radio in the center stack, leading to a pair of cupholders and the ball handled automatic shifter in a black faceplate and all mounting screws are exposed as part of the 80's motif.  Plush tan carpet seems to have held up well, faded in some spots, and the headliner suffers from the common issue of disintegration.  Fortunately, there is ample aftermarket support for things needing replacement.  Meanwhile, the cargo area is spacious and clean and covered in tan carpet with varying exposure to the sun.

Drivetrain
Under the hood, we first note a tattered hood liner, (see “aftermarket” above!), and find a driver quality 5.0 liter V8, 305ci fed by a 4-barrel carburetor and rated at 190 horsepower.  Other than time induced patina and some surface rust, the bay is clean.  The engine is set back, of course, which Chevy describes as permitting “advanced performance parameters to be integrated with optimal riding comfort.”  A 700R4 4-speed automatic transmission sends power to the 10 bolt axle in back and power brakes are found as front disc and rear drum.

Undercarriage
Driver quality prevails underneath with plenty of surface rust and residual oil on all the pans.  The single exhaust does not have a catalytic converter and finds a Flowmaster muffler in back that sends twin pipes out the back, split from the center.  Suspension is configured as coil springs in front and a torque arm and coils springs in back.  No invasive rust is seen underneath, but there is flaking on the door bottoms, especially the driver's.

Drive-ability
We prime the carb and turn the key and travel back to 1984, when Ghostbusters was the top film, the Olympics were in L.A., and Band Aid was a big hit.  F-bodies almost never disappoint when it comes to handling and this one is no exception.  It provides decent power but wouldn't be described as fast by today's standards.  By any standards, however, it's a comfortable car with great visibility and now uncommon coolness.  All functions onboard work as expected.  While Classic Auto Mall represents that these functions were working at the time of our test drive, we cannot guarantee these functions will be working at the time of your purchase.

The 80's saw a resurgence in the muscle car realm and these early third gen cars will always be regarded as the predecessor to more power, more features, ultimately leading to a long break in production and a complete redesign with retro styling.  So, it's the third gens that stand as unique and for many kids of the 80's, brings back nothing but good vibes!   They're rare to see in the wild these days but almost always present at car shows and pampered like the classics they are.
