1970 Pontiac GTO Convertible Judge Tribute
For consignment, a 1970 Pontiac GTO convertible Judge tribute showing 98,078 unverifiable miles. 3,797 were built with the Judge trim level and upgrades in 1970, but only 168 of them were convertibles. Being rare, true convertible Judges go for high dollars, but through the aftermarket, many of the components and cosmetic enhancements are available and with the right ingredients, a convincing tribute can be produced.
Exterior
Polar White was a GTO Judge color in 1970, and it coats our car in two stage beauty, here with the requisite Judge stripes in blue, gold, and red. These are unique, elongated spears that ride straight over the wheel openings and are paired with the decal on back and quarter panels reading THE JUDGE in a 60's font associated with the TV show. While we're out back, we note the rear spoiler, a Judge standard, countered by the hood nostrils in front wearing Ram Air decals and together creating a menacing machine even as highlights are done in bright colors. Back to the tail, double twin tips split wide under the straight bumper in which the horizontal tail lights are embedded, wrapping around the corners in lieu of side markers. Dual headlights are recessed into the Endura nose and clear lenses on the marker lights create a monochromatic face, contrasted by the black grille and dark tunnels of the hood intakes. 15-inch Pontiac Rally II wheels look great on the corners and the white canvas top and its glass window is in fantastic condition too. Imperfections including cracks, chips, and bubbling, but overall the paint and brightwork are in great shape.
Interior
We go from a white exterior to a red interior, beginning with the door panels, nicely geometric, clean, and carpeted on the bottom section. Tall bucket seats live up front, lined with red piping and weave textured inserts, a pattern which repeats on the fresh looking rear bench. The 3 spoke plastic steering wheel fronts a faux woodgrain backed instrument cluster and A/C control panel. The machined metal applique on the mid panel houses various switches and an AM radio. Woodgrain dressed up the center console as well and the indicator panel for the shifter, while red formed plastic creates a storage bin with a lid that doubles as an armrest. The red loop carpet is in good shape, topped by vintage looking red Pontiac branded mats. Minor patina is seen throughout the interior, but so minor, we would not hesitate to show this vehicle. Back in the trunk, the space is clean and has a trunk liner and spare tire on a steel wheel.
Drivetrain
Ah, Pontiac's metallic blue covers the non original 400ci V8 under the hood and it's fueled by a 4-barrel carburetor which is hard to see under the intake piece on top of the air cleaner case. A show worthy engine bay as well with a TH400 3-speed automatic transmission behind it, sending power to the 10 bolt rear axle. Power brakes are onboard with front discs and rear drums.
Undercarriage
Other than some typical surface rust and residual oil on the pans, the underside is nicely clean and dry. Dual exhaust traverses through stock style mufflers before exiting with pomp and circumstance via those twin chrome tips. Suspension on the Goat consists of coil springs in front and a 4 link with coil springs in the back.
Drive-Ability
Regardless of the decals, this is still a GTO and as such, a muscular ride that delivers outstanding power and wonderful handling. It also has one heck of an exhaust tone and the intoxicating view of a wide wing out back. We found that only the A/C wasn't working, all other functions operate as they should. While Classic Auto Mall represents that these functions were working at the time of our test drive, we cannot guarantee these functions will be working at the time of your purchase.
“Tap your toes, jump and shout, here come da Judge, let it all hang out!” exclaimed the great Sammy Davis Junior on Laugh In. Even if you've never heard of the show, or seen an episode, you surely know what a GTO Judge is and the reason you're still reading. It's rare for more than one to show up at any given car show, except Pontiac shows, of course, so you have here a respectable tribute that isn't a Lemans with aftermarket add ons. It's a true Polar White GTO dressed as a Judge.
