1980 Chevrolet Camaro Z28 Hardtop
For consignment, a 1980 Chevrolet Camaro Z28 hardtop with a title verified 38,914 actual miles and a numbers matching engine! This proverbial time capsule is in great shape and let us make a recommendation for the next owner; buy yourself a copy of the 1980 sales brochure because the cover car is a Z28 in this paint color!
***Due to modifications of the emissions control devices installed by the manufacturer, please check your local, state, and federal laws to determine if this vehicle is applicable for use on public highways in your area.***
Exterior
The brochure tells us that the “Z28 is also one of the best dressed cars on the street with a rear spoiler, front air dam, rear fender flares, white lettered steel belted radials, and a bold new Z28 stripe and body color grille. Yep! Most of it is here, right down to the white lettered tires! This car wears Red Orange paint with orange taped stripes. The top stripe of the three stripe series is amazingly close in color to the paint, and it almost disappears. Meanwhile, black accents include a fill panel on the distinctive hood scoop, headlight bezels, the grille, window trim, and the taillight panel. 15-inch Chevrolet Sport wheels match the body color, while fender vents add a touch of aggression to the profile. Imperfections include deep scratches on both corners of the front air dam, some roughness and cracking where the door jamb meets the rocker panel, and another random scratch.
Interior
The 70's bleed into the early 80's with this tan interior, varying shades and materials on the door panel, along with a carpeted lower and racing stripe on the stitched insert. That stripe carries over the headrest on the front bucket seats in tan cloth wrapped in mottled brown vinyl, a configuration that continues in the 2+2 in the back where we see some patina on the molded plastic side walls. The faux jute wrapped steering wheels adds another shade of brown ahead of a black plastic instrument cluster, clean and straight and easy to rear. The center stack has some patina and includes vents, a lighter, (aka 12 volt outlet), an unmarked toggle switch, and a more modern AM/FM/CD radio above a storage compartment for things like your Rubic's cube, your clove cigarettes, your fake I.D. and other club necessities. Tan plastic forms the center console where the familiar shifter and base plate, almost synonymous with F-bodies of the era, resides and it's all clean. So is the tan carpet that covers the floor with vintage rubber mats on top. This non T-top car has a solid, soft headliner that is in good shape and the trunk is lined with a fitted black carpet and holds a vintage spare.
Drivetrain
Clean and stock looking is the numbers matching 350ci LM1 V8 rated at 190 horsepower. It is fueled by a 4-barrel carburetor and backed by a TH350 3-speed automatic transmission that sends power to the rear 10 bolt and 3.42 gears. Power brakes are supplied with discs in front and drums in the rear.
Undercarriage
Other than some minor and typical surface rust and some oil on the pan, this underside probably hasn't changed since 1983, showing a bit of usage, but not much. It's overall clean and free of debris and is uniformly black. The dual exhaust travels through glasspack style mufflers before exiting through steel pipes that run parallel with the body. There are no catalytic converters present. Coil spring suspension is up front with leaf springs in the rear.
Drive-Ability
Millions of F-bodies were produced in this generation but there certainly aren't millions left in this condition. The familiar cabin is comfortable and for the time, an ergonomic dream with elbow on armrest, hand perched on shifter, and left wrist draped over the top of the steering wheel, because that's how we rolled. This is a fine example and the 350 runs and sounds great and the car provides very good handling even if it's not the fastest car on the road nowadays. Other than the tach stuck at 5200-5500rpm even when idling, every workable function in and on the car operates as they should. While Classic Auto Mall represents that these functions were working at the time of our test drive, we cannot guarantee these functions will be working at the time of your purchase.
A well preserved F-body Z28 that will take many of our viewers back in time. For many, it was high school where plenty of kids had Camaros, but only a few fortunate brought a Z28 to school. And for some of us, you can't look at this car without thinking of Fast Times at Ridgemont High where the Z28 somehow became synonymous with Phoebe Cates, and that's not a bad thing. What would be bad is if you miss the opportunity to pick up a clean vestige of the 80's as the second generation headed quickly to its end.
