Description

1973 Dodge Charger Rallye 340 Hardtop

For consignment, a 1973 Dodge Charger Rallye 340 hardtop, one of 2,415 made, a numbers matching engine, restored in 2018, and with some internal upgrades and an EFI system.  Fully restored with laser straight panels, a rebuilt and over bored engine and sinister black good looks.  While this is them Duke boys, this car will still have you saying YEEHAW!

Exterior
The fantastic face has dual headlights next to a cove formed by the horizontal grille that is boxed and flanks a chrome nose that is the hub of the surrounding trim.  Behind it, a hood that screams muscle car with hood pins from the factory, a power bulge, and 340 Magnum on the raised portion.  Cowl vents are cut into the hood, not on a separate cowl piece like so many cars.  The polished window trim, as the chrome bumpers, are in excellent condition and that shine is picked up flawlessly by the side mirrors, the door handles, and the rear bumper.  And while we're in the back, let's note that upturned tail, a slight but integrated rear wing over the vertical rows of the segmented tail lights over big chrome exhaust tips.  Everything back here is intimidatingly muscular and intended to give the competition something cool to look at.  New 15-inch Magnum 500 wheels present nicely with their black inserts matching the car, and the wheel openings are augmented by polished trim.  We could not find any glaring imperfections on the exterior on this mean looking B-body.

Interior
A wood applique, shaped a bit like the stock of a rifle, adorns the door and this won't be the last of the woodgrain we see.  Meanwhile the pleated top and lower plastic panel of both doors looks great and shows no wear.  Tall bucket seats with button trim also look fresh and particularly sporty.  The rear bench in back shows a satin shine from non use and the wood of the doors continues on the sidewalls.  A 3 spoke steering wheel leads to a deeply inset gauge pod with a compact arrangement of dials, switches, the A/C panel, and AM/FM radio.  A Holley Sniper EFI screen and controller is mounted just under the dashboard, offering the only non stock appearing item on the clean interior.  A faux woodgrain base houses the shifter in the center console which has a high right border to favor the driver and below it, black loop carpet covers the floor cleanly.  The headliner is a bit wavy but intact, and the trunk is lined with a fitted mat and the same material covers the spare.

Drivetrain
Under the bulging hood we find a numbers matching 340ci V8, originally rated at 240 horsepower, which has been bored .030 over and the rebuild includes Sealed Power pistons and a Comp cam with .464 lift, 22i/226e duration.  A Holley Sniper Electronic Fuel injection system has been added and the transmission onboard is a rebuilt A727 Torqueflite 3-speed automatic attached to a Slapstick shifter.  Power naturally goes to the rear wheels where an 8 ¾” axles houses 3.23 gears with Suregrip.  The engine bay and the power plant itself are super clean and certainly worth showing off.  Power brakes are onboard with disc in front and drum out back.

Undercarriage
The underside is clean and dry, relatively driver quality, with only a few incidences of surface rust and no errant fluids or grease build up to be found.  The dual exhaust meets stock style mufflers before bellowing to the outside via chrome tips.  Torsion bar suspension is found up front and leaf springs in back.

Drive-Ability
The trusty sniper system means instant starts with no pedal pumping and an impressive growl and robust idle flow through the dual exhaust.  We point the long nose to the outside and our proving grounds, a ½ mile loop outside the mall, where this car proves to have great acceleration, decent handling, and spot on braking.  We note the A/C is not working nor the amp gauge, but everything else works as intended.  While Classic Auto Mall represents that these functions were working at the time of our test drive, we cannot guarantee these functions will be working at the time of your purchase.

Here's a relatively rare Mopar that will come with its original build sheet and a binder full of receipts.  Its sinister black exterior, healthy exhaust tones, and likely ability to “light 'em up” are bragging rights unto themselves, but when you add the production number of 1973 Rallye cars, well that sets you apart.  Yep, we'll roll the dice on this one and predict it will not be in our Hallowed Halls very long.  Clean and rare Mopars rarely do, so “dodge” your responsibilities for a few minutes and shoot an email to sales@classicautomall.com to throw your hat into the ring.
