Description

1964 Plymouth Sport Fury

In 1964 the Plymouth Sport Fury was again a two-door hardtop coupe or a convertible, wearing wide body-side molding with color insert, Sport Fury lettering and script, special wheel covers with simulated knock-off hubs, and bucket seats. V8 engines were standard and buyers seeking additional power could equip the Sport Fury with the 426 Super Sport 'Max-Wedge Stage III' V8. For the entire Fury line, the most popular body style was the sedan with 34,901 examples produced, followed by 26,303 of the two-door hardtop, 13,713 of the hardtop sedan, and 5,173 of the convertible. The combined station wagon production was 8,128 units. The hardtop coupe was the more popular of the two Sport Fury body styles with 23,695 examples built compared to 3,858 of the convertibles.

A lot of the cars we see didn't start out life as tire shredding muscle machines but not this one. Way back on August 1st, 1964, a gentleman walked into Calvin J. Wagner Chrysler, Plymouth, Valiant in rural Myerstown, Pennsylvania and fell in love with a black on red 1964 Plymouth Sport Fury. After the negotiations were done a 1957 Chevrolet 2 door hardtop was traded in and a menacing Plymouth was now about to roam the streets of Lititz, Pennsylvania. We present to you that car, now for consignment in all its big block, 4 speeded, tire shredding glory. With only one larger engine option available this Plymouth could still hold its own tearing it up and startling the Mennonite and Amish neighbors. Just a side note, C.J. Wagner is still in business today, while no longer selling new cars they have a prominent location at the corner of routes 422 & 501 still right in Myerstown, PA.

Exterior
Sinister Ebony Black, the original color, covers nicely straightened steel panels all around. There is slight misalignment on the trim spear on the driver's side between the front quarter and driver's door. Chrome and trim work is all good with few faults, even when studying it closely. This chrome and silver painted spear runs the gamut on the sides and presents itself at the belt line and does a beautiful job of breaking up the blue steel slabs. A pristine electric shaver front grille is flanked by dual headlights and a shiny chrome front bumper. A shout out to the B pillar with its V shaped design that adds to the very nice line this car produces. 15-inch chrome Cragar 5-spoke wheels are on all 4 corners. The fronts are wrapped with 215/70 R15's and the rear sports 255/70R15 wide tires.

Interior
Nearly perfect front buckets and matching rear bench are draped in red vinyl, just the way the factory built it. Between the front seats is a full-length console which houses not only a glove box but also a brushed aluminum surround plate from which the chrome handled white ball topped Hurst shifter grows. An original dash with a metal front and padded dash top houses all the correct gauges and an added oil pressure gauge. An original steering wheel is in front of this dash and has an aftermarket tachometer strapped to the column. Moving across the dash we see the slides for the heater control and the original AM All Transistor radio. Excellently preserved red carpet floods the floors, and a tight white headliner is above.

Drivetrain
Lifting the long black hood we are met with a shiny black restored engine bay. The focal point in here is the Chrysler Turquoise painted correct 383ci V8 topped with a 4bbl Edelbrock carburetor and a chrome air cleaner assembly making a tire shredding 335hp. All hoses and wires appear fresh and supple. On the back is an A833 4-speed manual transmission and to put power to the ground is a 3.23 geared SureGrip 8 3/4" rear axle. All business and all muscle here!

Undercarriage
Frame, rockers, body hangers, and floor pans all are looking straight and secure with no rust, just miles of black paint and undercoating. Newer steering components are now installed, and correct factory torsion bar front suspension is on while the rear suspension features leaf springs. Drum brakes are noted all around as is a dual exhaust system with Turbo mufflers.

Drivability
A well-built engine that fires right up, and off we go! Plenty of brute power in this car offering up some neck snapping acceleration while rowing the oars and also a good cruiser. Steering was nice and tight, and brakes stopped us quickly. All functions were working during our test drive...dig those AM radio tunes!

A well-built and well sorted piece of Mopar muscle, bought locally and enjoyed thoroughly. A very nice red interior to compliment the sinister black exterior and the right wheels to set the package off. Presently residing in the North wing of our hallowed halls and waiting for you to come enjoy.
