Description

1967 Chevrolet Camaro Coupe

In 1966 Mustangs were flying out of Ford showrooms, and Chevrolet needed an answer. After many secret meetings, and covert internal press events, engineers unveiled the official name for what had been known up to this point as XP-836. Camaro was the chosen namesake, and immediately the question became “but what does it mean?”. This question has no official linguistic answer, but as Chevrolet marketing people would answer “It's an animal that eats Mustangs!”

For consignment, a barn find from beautiful downtown Oley, Pennsylvania. Our consigner snapped it up and immediately took it to the spray wash where it shows just like it did after said wash, and adds the car does have replaced seat coverings, which was performed 30 years ago. The dash has all been resprayed from red to black. Originally red from the factory now of course white and black, and all looking great!

Exterior
With a presumably well done White respray covering the straight steel panels which are minding their gaps nicely, consigner states a thorough wash was all it took when he pulled it out of the barn. It has its original black vinyl top as well as shiny chrome trimmings. Simple RS front rocker badges, sans the wrap-around front stripe, hidden headlights, nice shiny steel wheels with dish trim rings and correct Camaro hub caps wrapped with Goodyear Vector Radials. Ladies and gentlemen, start your engines. Oh, and let's get a little gnarly with a super cool spoiler on the trunk lid.

Interior
In stark contrast to the pure as the driven snow exterior paint of 30 years yore, inside is pure black, pure straight and true, and now presenting as resprayed from its original red. Low back buckets with tuck and roll inserts and smooth bolsters in front and a matching bench stretching its legs across the back and we find ourselves recovered in black from original red heaven. A sleekly styled V shaped center console in black houses the shifter that has a white ball topper. The raked inward towards the floor styled deep inset round gauge dash is also original, and backs up to the factory steering wheel. Black carpeting floods the floors, and above a tight black headliner watches over the interior.

Drivetrain
A correct 327ci V8 is in from the engine bay. This clean and good looking mill sits within a very clean engine bay, and has a Muncie M20 4-speed manual transmission on back. This combo throws power back to a 10-bolt rear axle.

Undercarriage
Floor pans are rust free, as is the entire unibody undercarriage. It appears as if a fresh coat of texture paint on black has been put on, it's that clean. Some surface rust for the exhaust piping, and driveshaft however these appear to have been oiled, (it's going to burn off kids!), as they have a bit of a shine to the surface rust. Independent coil springs for the front and leaf springs in back and drum brakes all around and all is good to go!

Drive-Ability
An overall nicely running drivetrain that took me around the test track and did not even break a sweat. Solid braking and handling with the only frowns are the radio does not work, and the front doors to the headlights will not open.

A super clean, super cool barn find, certainly not purporting to be perfect, but a real driver and looking like it's been through some restoration. Nicely done all around, you can be secure in the thought that all is well with this gen 1 car that eats Mustangs!
