1968 Chevrolet Camaro Rally Sport
The first-generation Chevrolet Camaro is an American pony car introduced by Chevrolet in the fall of 1966 for the 1967 model year. It rode on a brand-new rear wheel drive GM F-body platform and was available as a 2-door, 2 plus 2 seat, hardtop, and convertible. A designation of RS was an appearance package that included hidden headlights, revised taillights with back-up lights under the rear bumper, RS badging, and exterior bright trim. It was available on any model.
For consignment, a 1968 Chevrolet Camaro RS package bathed in Corvette Bronze, hidden headlights and a wraparound contrasting black stripe. Oh, and lest I forget it's a convertible!! This beautiful and powerful example has had mods in the drivetrain department, a laundry list of parts that have been either replaced or upgraded and has a snazzy interior right out of 1968 which is groovy baby.
Exterior
A fantastic horizontal ribbed front grill included in the RS package and extends that grille effect through the lids to the head lighting. A black stripe races horizontally around the front of this pony car which has straight rust-free steel and is bathed in a 1968 option available upon request, Corvette Bronze. Simple shiny bumpers are on and looking great as well as other attachments in the shine department including side view mirrors, wipers and window trimmings, handles and locks as well as nice badges. On top is a black convertible top which has a zip out rear glass window. After removing the window, the manually operated top goes up and down with ease. It also comes with a parchment tonneau cover which shows cleanness and goes with the seats. The front wrap-around stripe starts a rearward journey in the form of a triple stripe, (wide sandwiched between an upper and lower thin stripe), which runs the length of either side. On the back a small spoiler is attached to the trunk deck, and the rear fascia sports wider bezel taillights for the RS trim package. Paint is just excellently applied and is definitely the deep end of the pool, obviously applied by a body man who knew what they were doing! Deep dish rally wheels are wrapped with BFG Radial T/A's on all 4 corners.
Interior
With the top down we can say “I can see clearly now the top is down, and it's gonna be a bright, bright sunshiny day”…but I digress. Just 1968 fab in here with black and white houndstooth inserts in stain free very clean broadcloth, with white surrounding bolsters in vinyl also with nary a mark on them. Low back buckets are in front, and a bench in back. All this wonderful stuff is floating in a sea of black carpeting and a black dash that has been updated. A duo of the deep set round gauges now have digital readout gauges and these come in stunning blue LEDs. The angled dash front is pristine and painted black and has eyeball Astrol A/C vents within it that are chromed. The center portion of the dash which rises from the console is made up of carbon fiber and within this panel is a digital AM/FM/Cassette Bowtie badged with CAMARO cassette door, and A/C horizontal vent, and the temp sliders. This center floats just above the black console which we can see has a Hurst Competition Plus short stalk shifter. Beautifully sculpted door panels have chromed toggles for the power windows and clean seamless armrests. All interior surfaces are covered with smooth black vinyl which provides a clean black field for the switches and ash receptacles. All very clean and very cool looking with the beautiful buttoned up presentation.
Drivetrain
A flip of the fully restored and painted Bronze hood underside reveals that I'll need sunglasses to view this 383ci V8 Blueprint stroker. A QuickFuel 4-barrel carb, and a completely rebuilt Muncie M20 4-speed manual transmission with a new 11 inch clutch feeds the fuel and handles the power. On the back is a 10- bolt 3.08 posi rear axle. Another part of this car deserving a standing ovation with all shiny valve covers, corrosion free bolt ons, headers and shiny supple hoses and wires with some intermittent braided stainless hoses when needed. The consigner also states, that the mill will produce 425HP.
Undercarriage
The hits just keep on coming for the undercarriage, as it had to be trailered here because there is nary a speck of road dirt seen on the jet black gloss suspension, drivetrain and floor pan unibody construction. Rust preventative paint was utilized over an initial application of a lizard skin coating. A new stainless steel fuel tank is strapped on the back and shiny stainless exhaust system featuring Magnaflow mufflers all in stainless, shine brightly against the black background. Power disc brakes for the front and power drums for the rear are supported by independent coil spring suspension in front and leaf springs in the rear.
Drive-Ability
We clamored to drive this baby, and it was worth the draw of a name from a hat which I won, (it may be because I had my name there 7 times). Anyway, it performed beautifully with limitless acceleration, great handling, and bias free panic stopping. AND I look like a superstar driving it because it's sooooo nice.
I dare you to find a nicer restoration of a '68 (THE year to have) RS trimmed Camaro. Just all the attention to detail is worth the price of admission, and when you get in you are in an E for an exciting ticket ride. A real head turner can create a 1 car parade on main street, and you'll only be going for groceries. Note the original engine and transmission WILL come with this car if ya want it.
