Description

1986 Chevrolet Camaro Coupe

Chevrolet introduced the Camaro on June 28th, 1966, began making them in August, and by September, the first cars were delivered to the public. Ever since then, every Camaro ever built has had a singular goal: beat Mustang. It's the most intense and enduring automotive rivalry in America, and arguably the world. The official company line in 1966 was that it's an old French slang term for camaraderie and friendship, though some GM brass told the press it's "a small, vicious animal that eats Mustangs.” Later, legends grew to include a rare disease that kills horses (i.e., Mustangs). In reality, it's a unique name that met Chevrolet's main requirement of starting with the letter C (think Corvette, Chevelle, Corvair, etc.).

For consignment a 1986 version of the Chevrolet Camaro. This car has an orange respray, and some IROC badging (which the consignor states it is NOT and was put on by the previous owner). This year has a snazzy T top, greenhouse rear glass, dual inset rectangular headlights, and a louvered sculpted hood. With a mere 67,321 miles there is still a lot of gas to burn through on this baby, so let's go search out a Mustang to have for lunch!

Exterior
Originally white, it was then changed to orange with black accenting. A black grille, black front area dam, black accenting, and a black rocker covering add to the mystique with the orange, which is miles deep and shows well. The rear raked in spoiler is also black and frames the iconic rectangular grid tail/signal/and backup lights which wrap around to the rear quarters. Note the T tops which do not leak and are fashioned out of smoked shatterproof glass. Speaking of glass, there's plenty more for the wrap around greenhouse rear glass which serves as a “hatchback” if you will and works its way to the trunk. 5 spoke star pattern aluminum alloy wheels are wrapped in like new rubber.

Interior
A swing of the doors and we see angled striped light and dark cool gray striped broadcloth for the uppers, and gray carpeting for the lowers. All black molded plastic for the door actuator, armrest and window toggles. Moving inside nice clean gray broadcloth high back buckets are in front and a 2 plus 2 rear bench offers up some room for 2 more. A black topped center console is on the hump and this rises to the original dash also in black. Clean gray carpeting floods the floors, and everywhere else save for the glass T top is covered in black vinyl or plastic which has been expertly molded to create a litany of interior shapes pleasing to the eye and touch.

Drivetrain
Under the hood is a 305ci V8 that is topped with EFI. On back is a 700R4 4-speed automatic and the rear axle takes the power from this mill via a 10-bolt 2.73 gear rear. All surfaces are clean and show some nice patina overall, but no rust or corrosion.

Undercarriage
Fairly clean floor tubs which are stamped steel are solid and rust free. A heavier coating of surface rust has managed to roost on the suspension parts and rear axle, but these are all structurally sound and fully operational. We can note independent front coil spring suspension, and torque arm with coil springs for the rear. Also, power disc brakes are upfront, and power drums for the rear. Exhaust is clean and is a stock style installation.

Drive-Ability
Just a great driver, lumbers a bit around corners when pushed, but all in all a real performer. Good solid braking, and all functions save for the radio were working during my cruise to get lunch. It turned more than a few heads too!

A good example, respray, nicely maintained, and appearing ready to sneak up to a Mustang and say BOO!
