1963 Chevrolet Nova Sedan

Chevrolet designer Clare MacKichan recalled about creating the Chevy II: "There was no time for experimentation or doodling around with new ideas from either the engineers or from us in design; And it had to be a basic-type car." "I think that was the quickest program we ever did at any time," he continued. "We worked night and day on that car, and it didn't take very long to run it through our shop because we had a deadline." And that's what made the Chevy II one of the fastest new-car development programs in GM history – just 18 months after the designers got the green light, the first production Chevy II rolled off the Willow Run, Michigan, assembly line in August 1961, in time for its September 29 introduction.

For consignment, a very nice original example of the 1963 Chevrolet Nova. Few faults will be found on this Silver Blue with blue interior classic. Even the original mileage at 49,063 is impressive! Plenty of WOW factor, and spot on as to what a true grocery getter from the early 1960 looked like in the showroom.

Exterior
No rust on these straight steel panels with well minded gaps. All bathed in Silver Blue paint showing very few frowns on this exterior. Everywhere you look is elegant simplicity…from the horizontal front shiny ribbed grille, to the chrome topped line in the hood center seam, C H E V R O L E T badge in front of the hood, and beautiful bumper below you've arrived with a shout! This 4-door sedan was the second car for families on the go to have in suburbia, as mom was getting more mobile and the kids needed to get to practice or after school functions, and this was the perfect car to do it. On its sides a nice belt line trim spear which goes from black and chrome stripe to white towards the middle of the front doors, adds a nice accent to the silver blue. Window trimmings and drip moldings are shiny and brite as are the curved rear glass trimming rear deck surround and rectangular taillight/backup light bezels. More Chevrolet badging this time with a bow tie below and another shiny bumper bringing up the rear. Wheels are a slightly darker painted steel blue, have nice polished caps and are all wrapped in thin white wall tires. On the bottoms of the rockers is a straight rust free stainless steel rocker trimming, straight and true.

Interior
Speaking of factory or showroom, just the door panels fully put in the game with their deep blue perfectly embossed panels stamped into them. This provides the background for the armrest, the doors handle and window crank, along with a few more badges and an accenting bar top and bottom in chrome. As we move inside up front is the factory dash which is in pristine condition. We see a lighter blue padded dash top with no cracks or errors here, and the dark blue painted stamped steel takes over for the dash front. Within this long pointed oval stamped surface is the gauge cluster which is within a longer oval cluster with gauges and warning lights. Fronting this radio delete dash is an original two-tone steering wheel in light and dark blue with a beautifully preserved horn ring and center badge. A lineup of knobs and pulls is on the deep blue lower portion of the dash, and all are nicely restored. Deep blue carpeting keeps the two benches afloat. These are made up of shiny blue vinyl bolsters and upper backs with more embossed panels and a shiny badge in their center. The inserts are a cool 60's diamond pattern that lines them up in rows alternating between turquoise, gray and blue with some charcoal background to add interest. This broadcloth is in perfect condition and utilizes piping in blue vinyl as the delineation between the vinyl and broadcloth. I think I got the zig zags! A shout to the rear door panels which are also showroom, and sport ash receptacles on each arm rest. Above is a very tight, clean, light blue vinyl headliner and fully functioning light in the center of the roof.

Drivetrain
A rise of the perfectly restored with new insulation and black framed under the hood, more visual excitement with the block and valve covers bathed in a thick coating of bowtie orange/red. The intake manifold has been painted as well, and all surfaces are just beautifully preserved and perfect. As to the particulars, the engine is in I-6 format, is 194ci, is topped with a 1-barrel carburetor, and has a 2-speed automatic on back which is a Powerglide transmission. 3.08 is the rear axle ratio. Not a muscle car, just the perfect vehicle to get around economically in and look great doing so.

Undercarriage
A mixture of black undercoating, some road dirt, and patina with slight surface rust but it's rare on this undercarriage. All supporting cast members are present and accounted for like the front independent coil spring suspension, and rear leaf springs. Drum brakes are on all 4 corners and a clean rust-free stock style exhaust is on.

Drive-Ability
Just like I was driving out of the showroom with a big smile and salesman waving, I was driving the perfect Chevy Nova from 1963. And drive it did, all with ease, nice acceleration, good handling for this small car if you will, and bias free panic stopping. All functions were working like a charm.

This is a suburban utilitarian second car workhorse but is in thoroughbred condition. Low miles and a fine example of the 1963 iteration of the Chevrolet Nova.
