1972 Chevrolet Chevelle SS Coupe
The storied Chevelle is one of those timeless designs that looks good no matter how it's built. Stock, modified, race, pro-touring, whatever; the clean lines and balanced stance on these tough classics create a confident swagger that's universally admired. That means, if you're looking to ride in style, you really can't go wrong with a Chevrolet A-Body. And when you factor in this ride's big block drivetrain, tastefully restored interior and first rate, all-American sheet metal, you get the picturesque profile of an incredible muscle car!
For consignment a beautifully worked 1972, (Writer's opinion: BEST YEAR!), of the Chevrolet Chevelle. Consigner states 2,455 miles since the completed rebuild, and the list is extensive. So not unlike the end of a gripping Dateline Mystery, you'll have to read ahead to take in all the goodies that this car offers up. I'll tell you it's bathed in Sequoia Green!
Exterior
Utilizing all NOS parts like new front fenders, new front headlight extensions, a new cowl hood, hood pins and a cowl induction hood, this car was stripped down to bare metal, any faults remediated, then bathed in a beautiful respray of Sequoia Green. The top was a green vinyl originally; however it did not look the part so was not replaced, and now just painted. Wide white stripes are racing rearward from the front grille and continue through the trunk lid. A single headlight flanks a horizontal egg crate front grille which is near perfection with its SS badge and Chevelle badge mounted to the grille. Below a near perfect shiny chromed bumper frames the bottom of the front of this car. On the sides is Sequoia Green abounding save for the wheel well trimmings and an SS badge on the front quarter. 15-inch tires sport 5 spoke wheels are in a satin charcoal color with a chromed trim ring on the outside. Raised white letter rubber is wrapping these wheels very nicely. On the back, another shiny like new chrome bumper houses the round taillights, and this bumper is flush with the bodywork. Just below the rear roll pan we see dual exhaust peeking out from underneath. A shout to the B pillar which rolls gracefully from the roof to the trunk lid and carves out a beautiful line while doing so.
Interior
A swing of the doors and we can see the bowtie coming through on the door panels. There is a central panel with dark green tuck and roll vertical ribs, which is delineated by a shiny trimming with smooth green vinyl on the outers and sill. A like new armrest, actuator and window crank are seen, a small SS badge and side view mirror joystick. Moving inside I'm all green with envy as more green vinyl covers the beautifully preserved Strato front buckets with integrated headrests. In back a bench seat with the same pattern and of the same condition as the front seats can accommodate 3 people comfortably. A futuristic console with a green glove box next to the seats turns to an aluminum panel for the futuristic aircraft styled 2 bar shift lever. Up front a clean all original dash wrapped in green vinyl all padded and nice has a black panel insert for the instrument cluster. Here we see a trio of large round gauges for the fuel speedometer and clock to drivers right, along with some extra rounded inset warning lights, a few pulls and other levers. Fronting this is the original comfort tilt steering column and wheel which is also in pristine condition. Green carpeting floods the floors and is excellent, as is the headliner above which is also green. A shout to the trunk which has also been completely restored with textured speckled trunk spray, a gray vinyl mat and we see a sticker, tire and jack mounted on the passenger's side.
Drivetrain
A lift of the striped hood, and there is going to be some WOW factor coming up! Here we see an orange/red painted block, valve covers and intake manifold looking much like new. We are staring at a completely rebuilt 402ci V8. Consignor stated original engine and transmission. All else is original like the 4-barrel carburetor on top, and the intake manifold. A 3-speed automatic transmission, (TH400), is on back. On the rear is a 12-bolt 3.31 posi rear axle.
Undercarriage
Just like the top side, it's just beautifully done with no rust, nice black paint, and a new gas tank, exhaust system, shocks and the sport suspension option from the factory. Independent coil springs are upfront and in back a 4 link with coil springs is seen. Power disc brakes are up front, and power drum brakes for the back. Even the bottom end of the engine and transmission are drip free and all buttoned up!
Drive-Ability
Our decoder/muscle car expert took this skate for a ride and he reported it's a goer. Smooth idle, nice acceleration, good power, brakes are solid as is suspension and steering and based on the visual check of the undercarriage, we would expect nothing less!
A very nice build using all original parts and what needed replaced emphasis on NOS, where extra money was spent to do this. A very nice example now is the green meanie gracing our hallowed halls.
