Description

2001 Pontiac Firebird Trans Am WS6 Coupe

The future is here with this 2001 Trans Am sporting just 17,602 title verified actual miles and some tasty engine mods in the form of Livernois Motorsport cylinder heads and a Stage 2R camshaft!  No one anticipated a mall with 1,000 collectible cars, but someone did predict their car would be worthy of collecting especially if the miles were kept low the car kept clean.  And that's what we have here.

Exterior
Bright Red, (GM's creative name for red), gleans on this car.  Move over Prince, your Corvette's got nothing on this flashy red ride.  The unmistaken face of this car features all kinds of air intake scoops, aerodynamic protrusions, and lights embedded in deep wells.  The hood has two giant bulges and hasn't looked this cool since the shaker hood days.  The low sleek design is enhanced by the heat extracting vents behind the front wheels, again, hasn't been this cool since the C-shaped vents of the 70's and early 80's!  The rear pillars rake dramatically forward, balanced by the long wing that wraps around the curved rear window.  It's in motion when it's standing still!  The honeycomb pattern on the plexiglass tail lights remind us of this car's heritage and the dual exhaust tips trace its roots back to '69.  The T-tops are smoked glass and created a jet-fighter profile and can be removed for the open-air experience.  WS6 specific wheels are 17-inch wheels and have an aggressive and sporty look.  The body, paint, gaps, and glass are all spectacular on the car as the previous 3 caretakers have pampered it well.  We note some wavey paint and possible bubbling on the roof panel but that's the only flaw we stumbled upon.

Interior
Three colors were available in 2001 and any one of them would look great against the Bright Red exterior.  But with some black accents on the outside, the Ebony works very well.  Simple, functional door panels contain just the essential things, all integrated nicely.  The black leather bucket seats barely look used and of course, the back seats, also split buckets, are very nice.  The black steering wheel keeps the monochromatic theme going with grip humps at 10 and 2.  It frames the view of the gauge cluster with white-faced gauges that include an overlapping speedometer over the tachometer and four small wedge shaped gauges with all the essential information.  The factory AM/FM/CD Monsoon radio with equalizer is in the center stack, just above the climate controls, each showcasing the gray buttons and knobs that were used for a stretch of time at Pontiac.  An Hurst H badged shifter knob graces the center console and allows for you to rip through the gears with ease.

Drivetrain
The original 5.7 liter LS1 is in place but has been massaged quite a bit.  It's got Livernois Motorsports CNC Ported Stage 3 heads, 200cc runners, 310cfm intake flow, 245cfm exhaust flow, 2.02/1.75 valves.  The cam is also from Livernois and is a Stage 2R cam with .602 lift and 236 duration both at .050.  A Tremec T56 6-speed manual transmission shifts the gears and spins the shaft which meets 3.42 rear gears in a 10 bolt rear with Positraction.  Kooks headers grab the exhaust gases on their way to the underside.  Our consignor states a new clutch has been installed and new brakes and rotors are on the power disc brakes all around.  Red painted plastic engine covers along with red tubing are a nice touch under the hood which otherwise looks mostly stock and hides the internal mods.

Undercarriage
The headers hand off the exhaust to pipes sans catalytic converters that come together as one and then head to a Borla muffler where it re-splits into two and sends out four exhaust tip through two tailpipes.  We note some surface rust on the rear axle, suspension components and brake brackets but nothing of overt concern.   Hotchkis rear lower control arms are noted in an overall clean and solid undercarriage.  Coil springs suspend the car independently in front and via torque arm in the back.

Drive-Ability
A turn of the key unleashes a raucous sound and got the attention of some unsuspecting colleagues.  Suddenly this stock appearing car has a different personality.  At any rate, we put it in first gear and aimed the big red nose towards the test loop.  The car has great acceleration but is completely streetable.  The shifter is like buttah' and the wide 275/40/ZR17 tires grip hard and carry the car into lean free turn ins.  The seats and ergonomics are fantastic and visibility is generally good.  She stopped on a dime and then rumbled her way back into the garage.

For someone looking for a bit of a sleeper look no further than this stock appearing quick car that's been massaged into a fast car this Trans Am provides that unique opportunity.  It's a sweet build that will leave red light warriors quite impressed with the back of your car, (Classic Auto Mall does not condone street racing, but accelerating from a red light quickly is not racing).  The WS6 is a step above the “norm” and this car takes it to another level.
