1971 Dodge Charger Super Bee

The origin of the name, "Super Bee", has its basis in the "B" Body designation pertinent to Chrysler's mid-sized cars, including the Road Runner and Charger. Plymouth's Roadrunner sales were enough to have Dodge Division General Manager, Robert McCurry, request a similar model from the Dodge Styling office. Senior designer, Harvey J. Winn, won a "contest" with the name "Super Bee" and a new logo design based on the Dodge "Scat Pack" Bee medallion.

As sweet as 1971 muscle car honey gets, we have a Super Bee gracing our hallowed halls. Now with the heart of a 440ci V8, Edelbrock intake and Holley 4-barrel carburetor you can take flight and start the pollination process. Rest assured when it comes to any contest you can have “bees of mind” that more than likely you will win.

Exterior
Bright Blue Metallic was a popular color choice in '71, but it is correct on this Super Bee. Applied over laser-straight bodywork and some well minded gaps, this is a seriously good-looking car from a seriously good looking year. The long nose/short deck styling made popular with the pony cars translated well to the new Charger, and this one looks fast just sitting still. The only graphics this car is sporting are the black hood insert intakes have 440 Magnum on them. The trim and brite-work remain fairly shiny. Note that this car does have the fender-mounted turn signal indicators. The emblem upfront on the grille is bright and crisp, and dual non hidden headlights are upfront. As a link to the past, the taillights are housed in the rear bumper, and the two exhaust tips peek out of the rear valance in custom-fitted notches. 14-inch Magnum 500 rally wheels are wrapped by red line tires on all 4 corners.

Interior
A swing of the doors and we see very nice black tuck and roll upper door panels, then a trim strip, then a line of wood appliqué, then some molded vinyl below in black. A shiny door actuating paddle and window crank are also in this differing field of texture and surfaces. Upfront we note a split front bench in black vinyl and nearly perfect condition. In back is a pattern matching bench which is also presenting very nicely and perfectly clean. Some extra wood appliqué is on the dash and frames the rounded gauges, radio and black knobs and sliders. On the steering column is an aftermarket tachometer, and the actual steering wheel is original and uses the “fratzog” logo in the center which is missing a trim piece. On the hump is a center mounted shiny housing for the Hurst automatic shifter. The is within a field of black carpeting and above is a tight black headliner and nice B pillar coverings with some embossing in back.

Drivetrain
So going in under the hood we note a 440ci V8 (circa 1972-78). On top is an Edelbrock Intake, and a 4-barrel Holley carburetor. In back of this newer mill is a 3-speed A727 Torqueflite automatic transmission. Headers are on for easier exhaling, and in keeping with that a Flowmaster exhaust takes spent gases to the rear and out!

Undercarriage
A shiny fuel tank sits within a field of surface rusted metal undercarriage. All remains very structurally sound though. Torsion bar suspension is up front and leaf springs for the back which includes an 8-3/4-inch rear axle. Some undercoating is also in light gray spray and can be seen peeling off at minor places.
Paint is nice and rust free, interior is in very good condition, and the engine is newer and bigger than what this car was born with. It is not an original 440 Super Bee but yet more like a clone with the ability to fly around!
