2008 Ford Mustang Bullitt
Proudly gracing our vast inventory of overstuffed showrooms, one of the 4,346 Highland Green Metallic Bullitt Mustangs from the 2008 model year, number 2,678 to be exact. Used but not abused, with a relatively low title verified 89,063 actual miles, and meticulously maintained is the best way to describe this limited-edition modern muscle car. From the nicely applied retro throwback paint, to the dark charcoal leather you're staring at a collectible and well cared for 15 year old car that begs to be added to your collection. Read on to learn why you NEED this car!
Exterior
If you only take a quick glance you may mistake this car for a run of the mill 6-cylinder pony and boy would you be wrong. The stylists at Ford were very careful to show restraint and stay true to the original 1968 movie car. The less is more approach used with the 2005 Mustang was taken to a new level with the Bullitt. A black mesh grille devoid of the iconic chrome pony and large fog light leads the way. This grille is accented by a satin aluminum strip that is a throwback to the 1968 Mustang but also does a splendid job of framing the black hole next to the proper Dark Highland Green. The side steel panels flow nicely with well minded gaps and at the rear we see a spoilerless trunk lid and a circular faux gas cap/badge that proclaims the car to be a Ford Bullitt. A duo of trio taillights frame this cap/badge and harken back to the Mustangs of yore. They are now larger and flattened but still reminiscent of past generations. Dual exhaust tips peek out of the lower bumper and 18-inch Euroflange cast aluminum wheels wrapped in deeply treaded 235/50ZR18 rubber adorn all 4 corners. A few scuffs, scrapes, dings and scratches are noted in the finish, but overall things are well kept for the age and logged mileage.
Interior
Nice simple door panels utilize molded plastic vented vinyl and a tasteful touch of thin trimming along with power window toggles, power lock switches and some woofers and tweeters. Inside we can see the blue glow from the dash on the beautiful high-backed Charcoal leather buckets with even higher headrests. An interesting factoid is the seat foam is soy based and much friendlier to the environment. In the back is a foldable 2 plus 2 bucket/bench, and this is also very nice. A center console runs through the buckets and houses a satin aluminum ring which surrounds the machined aluminum shifter ball. As it rises to the dash center we see the HVAC controls along with the Shaker 500 AM/FM/CD changer stereo. On the black padded vinyl topped dash and real machine turned aluminum dash front, are 2 large round deep set gauges, (again reminiscent of days of yore), with a central huge cluster, all analog save for the digital odometer readouts. Black carpet and a felt fuzzy headliner is tight and clean below and above.
Drivetrain
Lifting up the long green hood we see a 4.6L 3v V8 stuffed in the engine bay all fitting nicely under the factory installed Bullitt strut tower brace. It is fed air by a factory Ford Racing cold air kit, a first for production fuel injected Mustangs. A more engine calibration gives this engine the capability to produce 315hp on premium gas but if need be, it can still be run on pump regular. A Tremec 3650, modified at the factory for quicker, more precise shifts is bolted on the back. A Ford 8.8 3.73 TracLok rear axle is standard fare to put power to the ground.
Undercarriage
A little bit of road dirt and some slight surface rust on the untreated components show the original miles have been good to this car. All solid and clean, we see independent coil spring front suspension, and a 3 link with panhard bar rear suspension both of which have more aggressive shock and struts and stiffer springs which work together to give the car a meaner lower stance all of which being factory stock. Power disc brakes are on all 4 and give us the whoa factor. From the engine's manifolds to the Bullitt specific H-pipe and muffler the underneath looks just be-utee-ful!
Drivability
My muscle car aficionado and crack decoder won the coin toss and got to wheel this limited production pony. He reported wonderful acceleration, superb handling, and stellar braking. Although he took the liberty of a few extra laps around the test track under the guise of being hot on the tail of a Dodge Charger and he said the precisely tuned exhaust hit the mark of the original Bullitt Mustang.
All in all, a very nicely preserved, well kept and lower mileage example of the retro Bullitt and it's star Steve McQueen. You too can fantasize about dodging in and out of cable cars and becoming airborne in those hilly streets of San Francisco. …Rice a Roni…A San Francisco treat! Cue the Bullitt.
