Miles Deep Paint/396ci V8/TH350 Auto/Striking Interior/Super Chevy Winner
1969 Chevrolet El Camino
The 1969 models showed only minor changes, led by more-rounded front-end styling. A single chrome bar connected quad headlights, and a slotted bumper held the parking lights. New round instrument pods replaced the former linear layout. For the first time, the Chevrolet 350ci V8 was used in an El Camino. The Super Sport group included a 265 or 325hp 396-cubic-inch V8 beneath a double-domed hood, along with a black-out grille displaying an SS emblem. More potent editions of the 396 engine, developing 350 or 375hp also made the options list. We proudly offer to you on consignment, this SS tribute version that is now sporting a 396ci V8, that has won Super Chevy Sunday at Maple Grove Raceway, has been featured in a few magazines and as our consignor says, "it's an absolute blast to drive".
Exterior
The beneficiary of a prior restoration we now see laser straight rust-free steel, well minded gaps, great chrome and stainless trimmings, and repainted in the deep end of the pool's color change to teal. From the B pillar forward its “look…! it's a Chevelle SS”, but from the B pillar rearward, its “look! …it's a hauler.”. Speaking of the bed, the top edges are clad in nicely polished stainless and a white bowtie logoed carpet covers the teal painted bed floor. Throw in a scooped hood and add in some snappy Boyd Coddington 15-inch wheels wrapped in BF Goodrich 255/60R15's in front and wider 275/60R15's on the rear and let's boogie.
Interior
KISS is the theme from the interior, and it does so by utilizing plenty of parchment vinyl. For the doors we get the SS396 designator badging along with vertical ribbed vinyl and smooth vinyl and some trim delineation. Crossing over the perfect threshold which holds back a sea of black pristine clean carpeting, we can rest ourselves on a wide and comfy parchment vinyl bench split seat with tuck and roll inserts and smooth bolsters. From here we can take in the original dash, in dash tachometer, and gauges and knob setup, all new for 1969. An AM/FM radio and power steering are there for making the drive just a bit easier and supporting gauges hang below the dash. A near perfect black padded topper covers the dash and fronting this is a crossed flags dressed 3 spoke rally style steering wheel.
Drivetrain
This 396ci V8 version is crammed under the hood and shows nicely with its chrome air cleaner cover, valve covers and bolt ons. An orange/red GM block is present, and little to no corrosion or rust is noted anywhere. This 396ci V8 is topped with a single 4-barrel Holley carb mounted to a near mirror polished aluminum intake. A TH350 3-speed automatic transmission throws power rearward to a 12-bolt rear axle, and then the rear tires smoke?!?
Undercarriage
Some surface rust and lots of black on the frame but all else looks showroom new. Solid floor pans, rockers which have been repainted black persist in this simple undercarriage environment. We note some patch repairs to the frame in various areas, that while are not visually pleasing, have corrected the problems. A Turbo muffler equipped dual exhaust, in need of new mufflers due to rust, works its way rearward in dual form from the headers which show only the beginnings of surface rust. Power disc brakes are up front along with an independent coils sprung suspension and power drum brakes are bolted to a 4 link with coil springs on the back.
Drive-Ability
These late 60's early 70's muscle cars never cease to amaze me and this one is all buttoned up and ready to perform for you. Just sneak it a treat of high test gas and it will stand on its own two rear tires…(well maybe not!), but it performs beautifully, great acceleration, good solid braking, and there is almost no better feeling in the world than cruising our well hidden test track in a well done Ute…SMOOOOOOOTH! All working and all good for the test track drive.
A fine example of a restored El Camino right out of its prime year 1969. A pre gas crisis, pre-emissions car, with lots of capabilities to haul goods and some ass!
