Description

1970 Buick Skylark Custom Convertible

For consignment, an early 70's hunk of Detroit iron in the form of a 1970 Buick Skylark Custom convertible. Taking a cue from the Olds 442's and Buick GS of this time, this car has a very similar body styling. Our version of the Skylark has a recently serviced engine, a new top, new roof seals and new top hydraulics. It's a 350/350 version, bathed in cream, and presents very nicely with very little exterior rust seen.

Exterior
Bamboo Cream is bathing the fairly straight steel on this coke bottle designed car. The paint shows nicely with some areas of slight chipping and very light rust in a few seams as well as some evidence of body filler. Dual headlights and an egg crate grille lead us off and a shiny bumper below has inset turn signal lights. Some thin stainless trimming can be seen edging the wheel wells and a bit wider piece for the rockers. Gaps are good overall save for the trunk lid that sits a bit high on the passenger side. A new convertible top, in a complimenting black, is looking in very good condition and sports a glass rear window along with new seals and new hydraulics. It moves up and down smoothly. A sporty design with characteristics of the Chevelle SS are seen throughout the car. Set within the rear bumper are horizontal tail lights and the bumper wraps around the rear quarters. Another wider gaping is noted on the sides where it wraps. Nice badging and polished Torque Thrust wheels are wrapped by deeply treaded blackwall rubber.

Interior
A swing of the door Willy Wonka and black vinyl with various textures covers the door panels. Both of the door panels do show some wrinkling, but there is not a tear to be noted. A nicely stuffed split back front bench and a matching rear bench without the split are seen welcoming the passengers. A fold down armrest is between the front seats. These are covered in burnished black vinyl which is looking an awful lot like leather. Smooth black headrests are on the tops of the front seats. A black rimmed Grant steering wheel fronts a black molded plastic dash and uses a black insert to house the square bezel round insert instruments. Just below are the heater slides, a small strip of wood applique and the aftermarket AM/FM/CD stereo all hovering above color washed and faded black carpeting. This dash shows some wear on the lower panels, and the temp sider panel is missing type font from the front of the bezel.

Drivetrain
Under the hood resides the patinated and original 350ci V8. It has been treated to new freeze plugs on the right hand side, a fresh oil change, a new radiator, radiator cap, hoses, water pump and thermostat. A single 2-barrel carburetor is on top, and on back a TH350 3-speed automatic with a new selector shaft seal hands off power to and 10 bolt 2.73 rear axle.

Undercarriage
Some surface rust is seen throughout the undercarriage. It is contained to mostly the rear portion of the vehicle and we see the rear frame crossmember, left side rail in front of the rear suspension and a few of the body cross supports have remarkable invasive rust. The mid-section floor pans have no rust, and the same is noted for the front of the car, only seeing some surface rust at the bottom of the engine framing. Like new single piped exhaust with a stock style muffler is on as are power front disc brakes and power drum brakes are on back. Independent front suspension and a 4 link with coil springs in back is showing most of the surface rust along with the rear axle.

Drive-Ability
This car started right up and on the test track worked flawlessly. It has nice power from the 2-barrel and good handling. All functions were in working order, and the seats were found to be very comfy. Excellent brakes and the new top are definite upgrade plusses but in the minus column we noted the temperature gauge was creeping toward the HOT side of things. Upon returning to our Hallowed Halls, my crack decoder found the upper radiator hose being very hard, very hot and resembling the consistency of an overfilled water balloon.

A nice example of the Skylark convertible right out of 1970 and showing some wear, but certainly nothing that cannot be remedied with a little TLC and sweat equity. The color is very nice, and the complimenting top is new. The 350/350 drivetrain is reliable and this car oozes good looks, all ready to take flight to your driveway.
