1986 Chevrolet IROC Camaro

A concept created partially by Roger Penske, the International Race of Champions or IROC would pit all-star drivers from numerous venues of racing, against each other in similarly prepared cars. Except for the first season, those cars were provided by Chevrolet, and they chose to feature the Camaro.

This IROC version of the 1986 Camaro is in full IROC street garb. Special Painted badging, a low slung windshield, some fairings, a “T” top in removable smoked glass, and a powerful 5.0 Liter tuned port fuel injection engine were just a few of the features that were added to this version of the Camaro. An original 44,444 miles and very clean California and North Carolina car.

Exterior
Dark Red Metallic covers the straight steel body panels, fairings and front built in spoiler of the car. A curved glass rear greenhouse deck offering up plenty of storage, and a bag for the T tops is seen on back. IROC Z badging in gold fade is seen on each door, as well as Z28 tuned port injection in gold badge on the front lower fender. Hood lovers and a removable smoked glass “T” top are optioned on this car. Polished 16-inch 5 spoked Camaro gold mags are attached to all 4 corners and noted as “front” and “rear” wheels because of different offsets. Lower rocker portion of this car is very clean and presents as a nicely cared for 44,444 mile car.

Interior
A snazzy beige angled striped and clear broadcloth bowls you over in bucket seat configuration shows stitching in the middle panels on seat and back. Bolsters are smooth and all bordered with beige piping. This also holds true for the rear 2 plus 2 seats which individually fold down for rear compartment access. A black console and dash, house all the critical instrumentation, as well as climate controls, radio and automatic shift lever. Power windows are installed. Power locks, power steering, power brakes, power toggle mirrors and a power driver's seat are working and are great conveniences with this sports car. The seats are pristine and beautiful beige and beige striped, as is the tan carpet flooding the floors all over.

Drivetrain
The Tuned Port Injection 5.0 Liter gives plenty of smooth power. This is fed with Electronic Fuel Injection. On back a 4-speed automatic transmission (700 R4 Model). All this attached 10-bolt 2.73 Posi-traction rear axle.

Undercarriage
Some surface rust is noted on the suspension and driveshaft and rear pumpkin. Floorpans are solid, as is unibody construction. Rear disc brakes are on and front discs all power brakes are on. Independent coilspring front suspension, and Torque arm suspension for the rear is seen. A Flowmaster exhaust is now installed.

Drive-Ability
As I sat inside, I was harkened back to my mid 1980's memories with the T top off and screaming down the highway going to the shore. This car fired right up, and the test track proved all those memories true, a great cruiser, smooth accelerator, and good handling. The cassette was not operating so I had to forgo my Peter Gabriel “Sledgehammer” cassette playing while I cruised.

For my test drive I wanted to keep the mileage at 44,444.4 but went .5 over! Lovely car, wonderful color scheme, and a good driver. Fairly clean spending most of its time in good warm salt free weather, and while in PA for the last 4 years, never driven in rain. An all original car harkening back to the days of big hair.
