Description

1969 Dodge Coronet 500

The very first Dodge Coronet came out in 1949 while America was still reeling from WWII. At this time, Dodge had also launched the Power Wagon, the basis of all Dodge Trucks in the later years to come. And what the Power Wagon had was America's first four-wheel drive. The Coronet, on the other hand, was a smooth-running car, and also had plenty of features to take home to mama. It had a decent run, one from 1949 to 1959 and then a revival run from 1965 to 1976.

Imagine if you will a time (1969) when a mild-mannered high school math teacher walks into a Dodge dealership and buys a car which he will keep for the long term. This yields a car with 1-owner, low miles, garage kept in two door 318ci 8-cylinder form and the quintessential grocery getter, efficient and reliable transportation car. For this description, the names and careers have been changed to protect the innocence this car reflects. Also, the badging says R/T, but is appearing only in the badge for this car as it is not an R/T. A truly wonderful survivor if you will, ready for the second owner in its 51-year existence. Awesome!

Exterior
Light Green Metallic bathes all surfaces of this all steel car. The beginnings of the coke bottle design are showing on the quarter panels which bump outward just slightly from the doors with a look from above. Nice stainless trimmings are present throughout and on the sides are used to delineate a darker two tone green on the rockers. A dark green vinyl top in good condition tops the passenger compartment. This car sports the R/T badge, but it is on badge only as it is a 500 VIN number car. Upon closer inspection on the side view, one can see a slight difference in the driver's front quarter panel in color, just slightly lighter than the rest of the car which may denote a replacement or a respray on a repair. 14-inch Mopar road wheels are on all 4 corners.

Interior
The original Olive Green shows us the way on the door panels to the inside. A low back duo of bucket seats with green vinyl tuck and roll inserts and smooth green bolsters flank a central armrest and smooth “filler pad to accommodate a 3rd front passenger or your arm. Seats are very clean, and the rear bench follows suit with the front. The original dash, very clean is up front, and is presenting itself also in the Olive Green. A few smatterings of wood appliqué and textured plastic in black offer up a background for the instruments and toggles and controls. Clean green carpet floods the floors in front and in back, and above floats a green headliner which remains wrinkle free and tight.

Drivetrain
Under the hood is an original unrestored 318ci V8. It is topped with a single 2-barrel carburetor and has a 904 3-speed automatic on the back with an 8.75 rear axle.

Undercarriage
Some slight surface rust and lots of patina on all underside surfaces. Structurally sound with solid floorpans and rockers. Drum brakes on all 4 corners, and front suspension is torsion bars with the rear being leaf springs. Typical wear for a 50 plus year old car.

Drive-Ability
A quick efficient starter, and smooth runner, handling the test track with flying colors. A comfy ride and noted the consigner states the heater core is bad so it will not provide heat.

A 1-owner example of the Coronet 500. Simple, utilitarian efficient transportation, nice paint, great interior, original engine, and drivetrain.
