For 1979 the body was completely restyled, featuring a new aerodynamic front end, revised rear spoiler, bulkier flares, and a revised connected single taillight assembly design that would remain consistent for the rest of the Firebirds design. The grilles have been repositioned to the lower section of the front bumper to allow more cold air to travel directly to the lower part of the radiator and engine bay. In 1977 the shaker hood scoop was revised, and four rectangular headlamps dominated the front end. The 1977 Trans Am hit unprecedented sales numbers due to the iconic movie Smokey and the Bandit. Reaching close to 300,000 units sold by the end of 1979.
The dark black attitude continues in the interior with the high-back cloth bucket seats, door panels, carpeting, center console, and even the steering wheel are all coordinating with this aggressive tone. Inside is a full gauge package, including Pontiac's cool tach/clock combo. Plus, this Pontiac has a ton of great features, like power windows, a tilt steering column, and an upgraded Motorola stereo. Of course, we didn't forget about the T-tops. It's one of the most desirable interior options from the '70s.
The 403 cubic-inch V8 has an exceptionally honest presentation, right down to the factory decals and the light blue block color you can see below the correct snorkel intake. And as you dig deeper, the hoses, compressor, alternator, belts, and more show signs of a good eye on maintenance. The V8 inhales through four-barrel carburetor living under that hood shaker, and a newer stainless dual exhaust means it exhales with power to give it a sweeter rumble. Power steering, power brakes w/discs up front, and a three-speed automatic transmission complete a package that delivers an easy to enjoy classic car experience.
