Description

1966 Ford Mustang Fastback

The Mustang name, of course, was born with this car, allegedly because aviation enthusiast and Ford Executive Stylist John Najjar Ferzely felt the car resembled a P-51 Mustang airplane. An alternate name-origin story suggests that designer Philip Clark came up with it in reference to the wild horses he saw on a cross-country trip. The horse angle, as opposed to the plane angle, is the one that stuck in the end.

For consignment a 1966 fastback version of the Ford Mustang. This one has been modified a bit for some racing, with the front bumper removed and racing air dam installed, Magnum 500 wheels, GT350 stripes and graphics applied, and an upgraded carb and intake setup with a Toploader transmission. Originally a fastback Mustang without the graphics, this car is ready to race now as a GT350R clone with a 289ci 4-barrel setup.

Exterior
With the GT350 option becoming available in 1965, this Mustang from 1966 has been modified to look like a 1966 GT350R. Front bumper removed, rear air duct brake cooler flaring (actually working) on the rear quarter replacing the hockey stick insert, plastic open top window for rear fastback, and some plastic inserts for the B pillar replacing the venting that was there. The car was then bathed in white, and has blue painted on wide dual stripes running from bow to stern. A pinned scooped hood is seen, as is the trunk, and overall, there are a few faults in the paint, with some areas of large rub offs, and scuffs and dings. Gaps are well minded, and 14-inch Magnum 500 wheels are wrapped with Goodrich tires. A blue GT350 badged stripe also graces the rocker just above the bottom.

Interior
The original pattern black vinyl door panels are nicely preserved, as are the handles knobs and pulls. Dual high back bucket racing seats in black vinyl are now replacing the originals. These have extra padding on the bolsters to hold you in the seat when experiencing maximum G's! The rear seat has been removed. The original 1966 dash setup in long oval form houses the gauges and presents nicely. This is fronted by a Cobra badged steering wheel. Airflow levers and several knobs are on the lower dash, and the radio has been taken out and replaced with a black steel panel. Cobra floor mats cover the black carpet which remains in nice condition, and a Carrol Shelby autograph is scribed on to the glovebox door. On the dash top in the center, is a Cobra branded tachometer. Note in the center of the buckets is a Hurst shifter with a white ball topper. A padded roll bar is seen on the back section, where the spare tire is housed within the fastback section. Headliner is black and hangs mostly tight above. The trunk has been recovered in black carpet, and a new cell style fuel filler is seen underneath the pinned trunk.

Drivetrain
A nice clean 289ci V8 is under the hood, and sports aluminum ribbed Cobra badged valve covers. On top is an Edelbrock intake with a 4-barrel Holley carburetor. A 4-speed Top loader transmission is on back, and the rear axle is a Ford 9-inch rear. Headers have been installed, and these snake rearward through a Glasspack style exhaust.

Undercarriage
Underneath shows some road dirt, and areas where the undercoating is chipping off, revealing the original color of this car on the floorpans. Slight surface rust is seen on suspension; however, the frame and torque boxes are very solid and rust free. Speaking of the suspension, for the front is independent coil springs, and for the back are leaf springs. Disk brakes are installed in front, and drums on the rear.

A nicely presenting GT350R clone with a 289ci V8, some working brake cooling ducts for the back, and shaved of its front bumper. Plastic for the quarter windows and back, racing seats for the interior, and a Hurst shifter...let's go racin'! 1966 Fastback style.
