Description

1972 Chevrolet Chevelle Malibu Convertible

For consignment, a 1972 version of the storied Malibu Chevelle and this one is a convertible.  An expert team of various restorers worked the exterior, interior and engine to create this wonderful example.  A few minor details to iron out, (see Drive-Ability), but minor for the most part, and it's a turn key car, nicely restored.

Exterior
1972 moved the headlights in just a bit and put turn signal lights in the front quarter corners.  A horizontal ribbed single grille is in the center and a shiny bumper below.  All rust free steel is painted Mulsanne Blue with painted on white wide stripes for the hood and trunk lid.  In the center is a white canvas convertible top and it is in very nice condition.  It is a power top, but it does not work electrically, however, it can be raised and lowered manually with ease.  We note the door gaps are slightly off and show some underlying minor rust bubbling.  On the rockers is a nice wide stainless trimming.  The wheel wells have been dressed up with a thin highlighting of stainless as well.  On the back, a shiny bumper which has inset round tail lighting is the perfect design with the trunk lid, allowing the bumper and roll pan practically coming to a point.  15-inch polished rally wheels are on all 4 corners, and are wrapped in 225/70R15 rubber from the 19th week of 2002.

Interior
A swing of the heavy doors, and we see nice white vinyl coverings.  These present with a central half “bowtie” design in vertical tuck and roll where the actuator armrest and window cranks reside.  The outers are framed in smooth white vinyl.  Floating in a sea of black carpeting which is pristine, we see medium high backed buckets with headrests.  These are the Strato seats and have more tuck and roll for the inserts and smooth bolsters.  They are nearly perfect in white vinyl, meanwhile a rear bench, with perfect armrests is stretching across the rear, again all in white.  Upfront ,the black factory dash is in and looking great.  All original gauges and 2 aftermarket units are just underneath the dash.   An aftermarket AM/FM/Cassette radio is taking the place of the original.  The factory chrome heater/defrost slides are present and accounted for and the dash pad and top is all good.  In the center, a slight V shaped contemporary console races to the dash,  it has a brushed stainless slate as an accenting topper, glovebox and a Hurst T handle floor shifter.  The shifter is missing its boot.

Drivetrain
Under the restored underside of the hood and engine bay sits a numbers matching 350ci L65 V8.  It has been bored over .030 and has been completely rebuilt.  It now has 1.94 intake valves in the cylinder heads and a single Holley carburetor on top.  A correct Saginaw 4-speed manual transmission takes power from this potent mille and sends it to a 10 bolt 2.73 CGC stamping code rear axle.  Headers and a Turbo muffler are now on for the exhale.

Undercarriage
Mostly restored with just a bit on the back showing some primer spray, however the stamped floors, framing and rockers are all solid.  All are also dirt free and like new with just a slight surface rust on the usual suspects.  Front independent  suspension with coil springs are in, and on back is a 4 link also with coil springs.  Power disc brakes for the front, and power drums for the rear.

Drive-Ability
A quick fire up and off to the track where it ran smoothly and had good braking.  The transmission shifted easily and smoothly.  Several items like the heater blower, rear defogger, (we doubt it's there, although there is a switch on the dash), power top, reverse lights and the radio all were not working.  The fuel gauge is also inaccurate according to our consignor.  These are the small details I mentioned in the preamble.

All in all, well restored and looking nice with very little rust, a rebuilt engine and pristine white interior.  Painted on stripes and it's a nice example from 1972 which was a very good year.  (When I was 17, it was a very good year….)
