Description

1972 Pontiac LeMans Convertible

The Pontiac GTO of 1968-72 embodies just about everything that was fantastically ridiculous about American muscle cars. Bright colors, loud graphics, monstrous size, powerful engines, a hood-mounted tach, and a rear spoiler that doesn't really do anything—the GTO's got the goods. The second-gen GTO also has the pedigree of a great name; the original GTO of 1964 is widely credited with sparking the muscle car craze in the first place.

For consignment a LeMans Sport that gets as close to a convertible GTO as one can get without actually ordering a GTO. Enduro Bumper, Ram Air Hood, Splitter Tailpipes and G70 tires. And it's a convertible and all original car, a good example that has a nice history and the original keys!

Exterior
Lucerne Blue from the body matching bumper that surrounds the grille and forms the iconic Pontiac “beak” to the dual cowled Ram Air hood, quarter panels front and rear, and a straight door in the center, it's all bathed in it. The rear bumper remains in pristine mirror-like chrome condition, and the taillights are imbedded into it. A few dents and dings and slight scratches are noted throughout, but overall very nice paint. A white canvas power convertible top with a glass rear window, all clean is the lid for this classic, but we all who interact with this machine here at Classic Auto Mall agree it's better down! We note that all glass in the car is correct and presents very well. 14-inch Rally 2 wheels are all around and wrapped with Polyglass G70/14 blackwall tires.

Interior
A swing of the doors and we are in original white vinyl nirvana and all is very well inside here. Door panels are clean and sport some stitching and chromed accenting in the form of an outside mirror toggle actuating handle, and window crank. Panning to the passenger area, more beautiful original white vinyl seats, buckets in front, and a bench in the rear, and nary a mark on any. These seats float in a sea of jet-black carpet all excellent condition. Fronting all this menagerie is an original black padded dash, no cracks on top, and a nice central wood appliqué for the gauge cluster. A white center console flies between the buckets and houses a long handled Hurst shifter to take you through the 4 speeds as you wish in manual form. Noted options are power steering, power brakes, power top, and A/C which is currently in-operable.

Drivetrain
Flipping the hood and we are licking our chops with all the under the hood goodies to which our wandering eyes can behold. All original numbers matching and nicely patina'd, the 400ci V8 awaits its lighting ceremony with a turn of an original key. Its topped with stock heads (7K3 castings with valve size 2.11i,1.77e). Feeding this mill the fossils and air is a single 4-barrel Quadrajet carburetor, and a 4-speed manual Muncie M20 transmission is strapped to the back. Out back is a 10-bolt 3.55 Safe-T-Track rear axle.

Undercarriage
Independent with coil springs up front and 4 link with coil springs keep this muscle on the ground in front and back. Power disc brakes up front and power drums for the rear bring you and your passengers back from warp speed nicely and safely. Frame and floor pans are solid, and sound and we note slight surface rust on the usual suspects. We can see on the left side of the exhaust at the engine manifold will need a doughnut as it currently leaks. There are no other areas of concern underneath giving this undercarriage an A overall.

Drive-Ability
Our muscle car aficionado and master decoder fought tooth and nail to get into this example, so we left him do it out of concern he was going to have a temper tantrum if we did not! Anyway, he found it a pleasure to drive, it handled nicely for him, and has wonderful acceleration although his words were slightly different (something about balls?) Anyway, all worked excepting the A/C, and he thoroughly enjoyed his time on the test track.

With all the options of a GTO, and in convertible form, AND only 29,896 original miles, this is a righteous muscle car. Great color combination and a 400 4-barrel 4-speed, you will be all 4 this car when you lay your eyes on it.(TIC)
