For consignment, a hen's tooth per se in the form of a 1977 Dodge Charger.  Our consignor is its mere 3rd owner, and he states that the second owner only drove it twice a year during his term.  Hence the low title verified 53,613 mileage, and condition to match.  It has an immaculate crushed velour interior, is an all original version, has participated in the Rapid Transit System Tour and has been used recently as a driver to shuttle the consignor and his wife back and forth to NC, where he says it will do 80mph all day on the highway and not break a sweat!

From the early 1970's version and within a space of 7 years how much has changed with this moniker.  Now it's morphed into a family sedan, large and in charge with a vinyl last 3rd maroon roof (landau), opera windows, round front headlight design with bezels, central V shaped grille, and rear quarter wrap around tail lights.  The car is bathed in a code EW1 Spinnaker White which our consignor states is original, and looking great.  A few road warrior dents and dings like the rear bumper neoprene filler being discolored, an encounter with something that could make the passengers side rear quarter and door in need of a body shop,  and some invasive rusting on the lowers through out in various states of decay, although it has not yet gotten out of hand.  The chrome is looking good with slight pitting, although very minimal.  On the vinyl roof driver's side lower seam there is also the beginnings of under bubbling of rust.  Square and rectangle design has taken over with really the only round surfaces are the head lighting in front.  A crested hood ornament with the SE badge denoting special styling aimed directly at the luxury car buyer, family man, and wife, and 2.5 kids that reside firmly in suburbia.  Oh and lest I forget the wire wheel coverings, also a measure of suburban success, sort of!

Burgundy crushed velour is all I need to say for this sophisticated luxury from 1977 interior.  The door panels use sleek smooth vinyl molded with wood appliqué accenting to make up the classy panels, and use of just a bit of carpeting on the lowers.  Extra wide seating in the form of luxury buckets are up front with power convenience added and a central armrest, all in low wear condition with tuck and roll seats, and tufted and buttoned uppers.  In back is a full on luxury bench in the velour which oozes mid to late 1970's as it was the “it “ fabric to have in your interior.  Leather gets too hot!  The dash is full on original with more wood appliqué mixing with black trimmed in chromed panels for various instrument “sections”, like gauge cluster, warning light and round fuel and temp section and wiper and light dimmer section.  Below is a horizontal panel with more wood appliqué that has plenty of modern, (sic), pushbuttons for climate and radio.  The remainder of the dash is in maroon molded plastic which makes up the ash receptacle and lighter setup, (essentially a smoking caddy), and glovebox in front of the passenger.   A beautiful smooth vinyl headliner in more maroon is above and nice and tight.

Under the hood is a coalescence of wires hoses and mechanical wizardry to kill engine performance and increase low emissions.  To combat these issues though is a numbers matching 360ci V8 topped with a single 2-barrel carburetor and an A999 3 speed automatic tranny.  On the back is an 8-3/4 inch 3.21 gear axle.  Some patina and no rust in this engine bay, just a gaggle of aforementioned bolt ons.

Underneath we note various stages of surface rust, but under the body on the floor pans and rockers are all clean and rust free.  The surface rust resides mainly in the suspension parts,  brake drum casings, exhaust piping, and driveshaft.  Suspension is front independent torsion bar type, and for the back leaf springs.  Braking is power front discs and rear power drum braking.  A factory stock exhaust is on.

Just like Ricardo Monteban hawking Cordobas, I slipped inside the luxury and fired it up, which it did immediately.  Off to the test track it performed flawlessly, in low mileage style.  Good acceleration although a bit sluggish, but it's a luxury car so I wasn't looking for neck snapping performance.  Bias free braking, and all working conveniences for this baby right out off 1977.

I don't understand how the exact same car, as the Cordoba, which sold over 160K units the very same year rose to such obscurity.  Maybe it was the leftover muscle car mystique the public could not get over, so the luxury fell in the hands of the Chrysler Cordoba.  But now we have a hen's tooth, low miles and runs great at 80mph highway speed all day.  And it's a classic Charger, a piece of automotive history and a transition from a successful muscle car to the luxury sedan sitting in front of you waiting for you to take it for a ride.  Ring the bell Tattoo!
