Factory V8 Car/LED Dash/10 Bolt Axle/Factory Power Steering/Desirable Bodystyle
A project car for the Chevelle enthusiast who wants to make a car truly his/her own. Owned by our consignor since 1987, and always used as a street car, albeit with a big block and 4-speed transmission but now being sold as a roller. Named after the beach front town sharing its namesake and originally settled by the Chumash indians, whose territory extended loosely from the San Joaquin valley to San Luis Obispo to Malibu. They named it "Humaliwo", or "the surf sounds lovely". Now residing right here on the east coast at Classic Auto Mall and awaiting your artful touch to bring this beauty back to its former glory.
Exterior
For 1970, the face-lifted Chevelle moved an impressive 634K units. Not only did that high-profile success earn GM big money, it also solidified the nameplate as part of Chevy's oft romanticized 'golden era'. Finished in a pleasant turquoise with yellow highlighted white striping along with a huge Chevy Thunder and bowtie in the stripe, the paint is presenting well but showing its age on the body and replacement half rear quarter panels. Heavy invasive rust has appeared on both the rocker panels and rust bubbling is noted at the bottoms of both doors. At the front of this coupe, a split grille is flanked by stainless-trimmed dual headlights on either side and are within turquoise panels. Below is a body matching bumper. Above that bumper, a domed white and yellow highlighted hood leads the eye to glass that's seated in sections of stainless frames. At the base of those frames, chrome door handles, a chrome driver's mirror all complement 14-inch brushed aluminum Cragar wheels. And at the back of the car, a second body matching bumper holds the ribbed integral tail lights and roll pan below.
Interior
Looking inside we see door panels that are showing their age and have heavy wear and areas of tearing. The armrests have been removed, however the actuators and cranks remain. The front split bench is covered in vinyl as well, and has a tucked and rolled black pattern which makes for an interesting and sporty design for this well worn seat. The rear bench is original and presents with a gray seat cover over the upholstery. The carpeting has been removed exposing the solid steel flooring and fronting the seating area is an unrestored original dash which has an aftermarket AM/FM/Cassette radio, and a padded black topper above. White faces have been added to the gauge panel and our consignor states that LED lighting has been added to the dash. We note the addition of a tachometer and a trio of white face gauges on the dash and down low the 3 pedal arrangement is still present.
Drivetrain
Upon lifting the hood we are met with an unfinished engine bay that is awaiting your choice of engine and transmission. Based on the VIN and trim tag this car was originally equipped with a V8 and a Powerglide transmission. A 10 bolt conventional rear axle is now in with 2.73 gearing. We note that this vehicle was factory equipped with power steering and our consignor states that all the wiring was gone over and the only non-working part of the electrics is the dome light.
Undercarriage
Invasive rust free with a dash of patina and surface rust is what greets us up in the air. Solid black flooring is supported by a surface rusted frame and we see very small areas of invasive rust in the trunk pan. Coil springs with an independent suspension up front, and coil springs with 4 link suspension are on the rear. We note drum brakes all around for the whoa along with dual exhaust and Turbo style mufflers.
A great Chevrolet Chevelle Malibu project car ripe for the picking from our Hallowed Halls. While not a turnkey car, the possibilities are endless as to the finished product, show stopper or street beast...why not both?
