Description

1997 Pontiac Trans Am

The 'Trans-Am series' is an automobile racing series that was created in 1966 by Sports Car Club of America (SCCA) President John Bishop. Originally known as the Trans-American Sedan Championship, the name was changed to the Trans-American Championship for 1967 and henceforth. The series has in fact gone by a variety of different names through the years (too many to list), some linked to sponsors, some not. It has evolved over time from its original format as a Manufacturers' Championship series for modified passenger sedans and Coupés to its current form as a Drivers' / Manufacturers' Championship Series that is open to GT style race cars. Champion drivers have been officially recognized, and Drivers' Championship(s) have been awarded since the 1972 season. Despite its name, the Trans Am was not initially used in the Trans Am Series, as its smallest engine exceeded the SCCA's five-liter displacement limit. Pontiac paid a $5 license fee to SCCA for each Trans Am sold to use the name.

For consignment a WS6 performance package Trans Am. A virtually spotless car save for the few faults one would see on a 22 year old car, this car runs great and flies like a screaming chicken!

Exterior
Black on black on black with just a spattering of red badging. From the long low sloped hood with a massive scoop, to the window surrounds, belt line trim to rear spoiler, and even smoked glass rear taillights, we see miles of straight black that has panels that mind their gaps fairly well. Special WS6 polished chrome wheels are on all 4 corners, and we can see shades of dual chrome tipped dual exhaust peeking out from the rear bottom.

Interior
Miles of tweed like square patterned cloth with tiny black squares in a field of gray, cover the very clean interior buckets and 2+2 rear bench. Keeping in the theme, gray carpet in good condition, with some soiled floor mats above, floods the floors, rear cargo area under the hatch, and a nice tight headliner is above. Peering toward the dash it is standard Trans Am fare excepting a must have on every interior, a PS-2! With a flip out mounted screen, your passengers can be entertained for hours with this baby! Consigner states that there has been Dynamat interior soundproofing added. Also noted is a kick ass Kenwood Audio system, so when you battle Pikachu, you can hear every weapon being used.

Drivetrain
With the WS6 upgrade and some consigner upgrades, we see a 350ci V8 LT-1 mill, with the advantage of Ram Air addition. A 6-speed manual T56 transmission helps light up the tires, and get you going, going, gone.

Undercarriage
Not unlike the top view, gazing underneath we see no rust that is problematic. Floor pans, and frame look very good and sound. A Hotchkiss front strut support has been added, as has Eibach springs, exhaust headers with electronic cutouts, and the factory spec. 10 bolt 3.23 posi rear. Power disc brakes are noted all around and stop on a dime.

A very clean 63,000 mile car that has plenty of life left inside and out. If you are looking for a nice example Trans Am that is not a Smoky and the Bandit type, look no further than the halls of Classic Auto Mall, and this Black Beauty.
