Description

1968 Pontiac GTO Coupe

Born of the brainchild of John DeLorean, the initial concept was to upgrade the Tempest, morphing it into an early version of the muscle car, which was the up and coming trend in a niche market of buyers who were hungry to go fast. The name, which was DeLorean's idea, was inspired by the Ferrari 250 GTO, the successful race car. It is an Italian abbreviation for Gran Turismo Omologato ("grand tourer homologated"), which means officially certified for racing in the grand tourer class. But in reality, the Pontiac GTO was never really a certified Grand Tourer race car. Internally, it was initially called the "Grand Tempest Option", one of many automobiles in the Pontiac line up with a 'Grand' in it. Despite these things, the GTO is one of the fastest cars ever manufactured by Pontiac.

Born the second week of February of 1968 with an Aegena Blue paint code, and a black trim code this resprayed classic now resides at Classic Auto Mall. 1968 muscle at its peak this year, and a rare Hurst shifter configuration this is certainly worthy of a look.

Exterior
A medium blue metallic respray is seen draping the panels and lids of this car. The optional hidden headlights continue the front grille across the entire width of the car. The car looks menacing with the hideaway headlamps, the Endura nose and those bulging Coke Bottle quarters. New for 1968 is the dual scoop hood seen here in fair (rust bubbles scratches in filler) condition. Body panels are straight however there are areas of rust bubbling in the paint, and rust areas in the lower doors, as seen on the provided pictures. The rear of the car sports taillights within the bumper. Chrome and badging are in good condition. The black vinyl roof covers the top of the car and adds a nice contrast to this exterior color. Rally II wheels are seen on all fours.

Interior
Black vinyl buckets flank a center console, which has a rare Hurst His and Hers option shifter
which Pontiac brought back, on their newly redesigned GTO. A rear bench stretches from side to side and as with the buckets, appears in very good condition. Fronting the passenger seating is a woodgrain dash, and an original steering wheel. Also, not seen are the concealed windshield wipers, which have a washer option as well. Power steering and power brakes are noted.

Drivetrain
A pop of the dual scooped hood reveals a 400ci 350hp mill that is very clean. A turbo 400 automatic transmission backs the engine up and shifts smoothly.

Undercarriage
Nicely done and little surface rust can be seen underneath. A 3:36 posi rear is installed from the factory.

Here is your chance to own a mostly original 1968 “goat” that runs well, starts quickly, and looks good. Just a few frowns are seen throughout, but it from 1968!
