1988 Chevrolet Camaro IROC Z28
A concept created partially by Roger Penske, the International Race of Champions or IROC would pit all-star drivers from numerous venues of racing, against each other in similarly prepared cars. Except for the first season, those cars were provided by Chevrolet, and they chose to feature the Camaro.
This IROC version of the 1988 Camaro is in full IROC street garb. Special decal badging, a low-slung windshield, some fairings, a “T” top in removable smoked glass, and a powerful 5.0 Liter tuned port fuel injection engine were just a few of the features that were added to this version of the Camaro. A consignor stated 35,485 original but not verifiable mileage and very clean overall both in and out example.
Exterior
Dark Red Metallic covers the straight steel body panels, fairings and front built in spoiler of the car. A curved glass rear greenhouse deck offering up plenty of storage, and a bag for the T tops is seen on back. IROC Z badging in red fade is seen on each door, as well as IROC-Z tuned port injection in a red to orange fade badge on the front lower fender. Hood louvers and a removable smoked glass “T” top are optioned on this car. Polished 16-inch 5 spoked Camaro mags are attached to all 4 corners and noted as “front” and “rear” wheels because of different offsets. Lower rocker portion of this car is very clean and presents as a nicely cared for 35,485 mile car.
Interior
A snazzy gray tweed and broadcloth bowls you over in bucket seat configuration shows Camaro stitched into the lower seat back. The bolsters are smooth and all bordered with varying degrees of gray piping. This also holds true for the rear 2 plus 2 seats which individually fold down for rear compartment access. A black console and dash, house all the critical instrumentation, as well as climate controls, radio and Hurst T handle shift lever, (the original knob is included with the purchase). Power windows are installed. Power locks and power toggle mirrors actuators are equipped on the gray tweed door panels along with a black plastic sill, gray vinyl armrest, and carpeted lower panel. The factory steering wheel, leather wrapped I might add, fronts the deeply inset round gauge cluster which resides under a crack free black dash pad. Gray carpeting floods the floors and is topped with the factory gray carpeted mats. Up top, a mostly tight gray broadcloth headline splits the removable glass roof assemblies.
Drivetrain
The Tuned Port Injection 5.0 Liter gives plenty of smooth power, 220 horses of it actually. This is fed with electronic fuel injection. Meanwhile, on the back is a Tremec T5 5-speed manual transmission. All this sends power back to a 10-bolt Positraction rear axle with the optional 3.45 gearing. Our consignors also notes that a performance chip has been added to up the ponies just a bit.
Undercarriage
Some surface rust is noted on the suspension and driveshaft and rear pumpkin. The floor pans are solid, as is the unibody construction. Rear drum brakes are on and front discs, all power help this racer stop dependably. Independent coil spring front suspension, and torque arm suspension for the rear is seen. A Flowmaster exhaust is now installed.
Drive-Ability
As I sat inside, I was harkened back to my mid 1980's memories with the T top off and screaming down the highway going to the shore. This car fired right up, and the test track proved all those memories true, a great cruiser, smooth accelerator, and good handling. The cassette player was working so I popped in my Peter Gabriel “Sledgehammer” cassette while I cruised.
For my test drive I wanted to keep the mileage at a low low 35,484 but went .25 over! A lovely car, wonderful color scheme, and a good driver. Near showroom clean, spending most of its time in good warm salt free weather, all the while treated to Mobile-1 oil changes and ethanol free fuel. Stop by our Hallowed Halls and let this Camaro IROC your world!
