1972 Ford Mustang Mach 1

In October of 1947, test pilot Chuck Yeager accomplished something widely thought to be impossible due to an aircraft not being able to withstand the shock when it happens. He proved them wrong by breaking the sound barrier, (Mach 1), on October 14, 1947. At the altitude he was, he had to be going over 662 MPH.

Fast forward to 1972 and we give you, a consignment, and benefiting from a full 3-year long restoration and a Cleveland engine, Mach 1. Some minor modifications to the engine, a rebuilt original transmission, and drivetrain and donning its original white color in a respray form along with a 98% restored interior, this big pony draws your attention with ease. Exterior
Draped in its crisp White respray with clear coat then add in some black graphics on the NACA ram air hood and some side striping and we are looking fast. Also, we can add some more black in the badges, which are stick on, and a rocker stripe. A few frowns are found in the form of some front bumper damage in spider crack form and some inclusions in the paint, none of which is noticeable from 10 feet away. A rakish rear deck angles its way downward gracefully all the way back to the rear spoiler. Underneath the spoiler we see the triple brake lights residing in a blacked-out panel and bordered by another stripe above and a clean bumper below. 15" Magnum 500 chrome wheels are on all four corners. The 1972 front grille is one of the most menacing of all the Mustangs and has been emulated even in newer versions of this moniker with the deep-set honeycomb motif. Lastly, worth noting this year we lost the hockey stick cove on the side panels and doors.

Interior
Turning our attention to the interior, correct high back black knitted vinyl buckets with black accenting stitched in are in front, and a 2 plus 2 fold down seat in the rear. The original dash, in the factory black color, with its deep round dual gauges, displays the factory tachometer on the left and speedometer on the right. In the dash center there is another trio of gauges surrounded by wood applique and below in a field of black is an aftermarket AM/FM stereo, temp control levers, and a clock. In the center console we note a T handled shifter and a deep storage compartment that doubles as an armrest for the front passengers. Carpeting is black and clean, and above we see a black headliner that is hanging tightly.

Drivetrain
A 351ci Cleveland V8, not the original engine, was rebuilt in 2008 and had a Comp Cams .468 lift camshaft installed. This beautiful blue mill also has a high flow intake courtesy of Edelbrock and a Road Demon 725cfm 4-barrel carburetor lurking under the blue painted factory Ram Air air cleaner assembly. Strapped to the back is the consignor stated original FMX 3-speed automatic tranny with a shift kit installed. On the rear is a Ford 9-inch pumpkin with a 3.25 conventional gearset. Helping you reach Mach speed is the factory equipped NACA hood duct assembly, so this engine is fully benefiting from the ram air. 5 stars on the engine bay presentation with nary a hint of patina or rust.

Undercarriage
All cleaned up and showing with the factory applied rustproofing and undercoating. The suspension shows slight surface rust, the floor pans are nice, and rockers have no rust. Dual Flowmaster exhausts make their way rearward from the factory exhaust manifolds attached to the Cleveland. Up front the ride and stopping is provided by an independent coil spring arrangement with power disc brakes and in the rear we see leaf springs and power drums. All presenting very nice down below.

Drive-Ability
This rocket fired right up, and we have liftoff! Plenty of power, and nice handling, and a comfortable interior to boot. It shifted smoothly, and all interior functions were a go. While this was a factory equipped A/C car, the system has since been removed but the compressor is included with the purchase.

Nicely restored and save for a few minor flaws in the exterior we have a nice example of the snarly Mach 1! A wonderful invitational provenance from the Carlisle shows, proper documentation, and that go fast NACA ram air hood, all you need to do now is “pony” up the dough and you can drive it right out of here...BOOM!
