Cougar XR-7

Description

History About The Mercury Cougar:
The Cougar was brought to the market in 1967 as an upscaled twin to the Ford Mustang, and the XR-7 package pushed the luxury and muscle combo a step further. It has a unique horizontal taillight design with sequential turn signals, as well as hidden quad headlamps and extra chrome trim. Mercury aimed for a more refined market with its beautiful trim and standard equipment, while remaining true to its performance roots by only offering V8 engines for its Cougar series, resulting in a car that was the best of both worlds. In 1970, the first generation of Cougars ended on a high note, with the final models receiving a new front bumper, fenders, and nose.

Details About Our Mercury Cougar For Sale:
Available at the St. Louis Car Museum is a 1970 Mercury Cougar XR7 Convertible representing one of only 1,997 XR7 Convertibles produced in 1970. Under the hood of this sharp, classic is its original 351ci Windsor V8 easily producing 250 horsepower with 355 ft. lbs. of torque mated to the dependable FMX Select-Shift 3 speed Automatic Transmission and a 9” rear end with a ratio of 3.00:1. This Cougar is finished in its original code-correct combination of eye-catching Competition Blue over gorgeous White Vinyl high-back bucket seats accentuated with leather and a matching white top! It's one of only 22 XR-7 Convertibles with this color and trim combination!

Our XR-7 comes with the original dealer order sheet and is loaded with desirable factory extras including cold Whisper-Aire air conditioning, power steering, power front disc brakes, power folding top, sports console shifter, tinted glass, and more! Upgrades include 15" chrome Magnum 500 rally wheels with raised white letter radial tires, a Pioneer AM/FM/Cassette player, and unique front brake air cooling ducts, which were added by a previous owner. Our experienced team changed the high beam bulbs, oil pressure switch, and installed a new air filter after being purchased by the St. Louis Car Museum.

This beautifully survived XR-7 was delivered new from JNO A Pope Motor Company in Columbus, Georgia, and completed on October 28th, 1969 in Dearborn, Michigan. It's no surprise that it sold in just 5 days after it arrived at their showroom! It now has 90,449 miles on the odometer and has had an older cosmetic restoration that included new exterior paint, a new top, and extensive detailing within. With only cosmetic restoration efforts to the door panels and other chosen places, the interior appears to be mostly original. For the previous 17 years, this Cougar has been lovingly cared for by its former long-term owner from Raleigh, NC. It was routinely exercised and remains road-ready to cruise and flaunt its eager power and sharp looks! With so few XR-7 convertibles made, and especially with these desired options and stunning trim combination, this is a car of rarity you don't come across very often!
