1986 Chevrolet El Camino Conquista
Not unlike the “Super Sport” Model, the “Conquista” (RPO: D91), is strictly an appearance-only package, and it also cannot be verified by the VIN. The Conquista package consisted of a striking paint and molding treatment. The basic body color appears on the roof, and upper portion of pickup box, lower body sides, and tailgate. The center section of the body side, the hood and lower portion of the tailgate are set off by a special accent color. Also featured are bright paint break moldings along the upper side of pickup box, and tailgate; bright moldings along lower side of body and over wheel openings. The “Conquista” logo decal was located towards the right-hand lower portion of the tailgate on the '78 model, and from '79 & up they were relocated to the right- hand upper portion of the gate. The package was available with all powertrain combination options, all interior option combinations, and did not “require”, or include options such as the bumper impact strips, bumper guards, bed cargo rails or tie downs, bucket seats, center console, or sport gauges. Therefore, optioning out an El Camino as a Conquista did NOT mean it automatically came with the aforementioned options, a full gauge package, AC, power windows and locks. Essentially, the only option that was included with the Conquista package, was the full-length, lower body and half-fender opening bright moldings: “Fender and Body Side Moldings” (RPO: BX8). It should be noted that these moldings could be ordered installed on a standard model, so the presence of the moldings alone cannot be a determining factor. -Thx to Elcohaulicssanonymous.com
The concept of a truck-like car came from a farm woman in Australia who wanted a truck to haul hay on the weekdays, and a car she could drive to church on Sunday. Someone from GM thought that was a good idea, and hence the EL Camino was born, although technically the Ford Ranchero beat them to it, (1957 as opposed to 1959), but hey it's a great story! For consignment Hi-O Silver two tone El Camino Conquista right out of 1986 and looking very nicely preserved. Purchased from the original owner after being in storage for 20 years, garage kept since, over $6,000 has been spent to put this truck back on the road safely, and sporting a title verified 44,015 original miles it shows as nearly new. If it's Sunday let's go to meetin' if it's Monday back to work!
Exterior
Square and rectangle design abound on all surfaces of this car/pickup version. Dual square headlights, a square opening for the egg crate grille and all this in a rectangle front end. A lower air dam in black plastic is on below the bumper, and these surround this vehicle and show in a darker gray. This dark gray continues around the vehicle halfway through the wheel wells, rockers and around the back. Straight rust-free steel is bathed in silver and back to dark gray for the roof and B pillar as well as the bed top edge. Some stainless trimmings are noted in the sides and window surrounds. On the back we note a nearly new silver painted bed that sports a rubber liner covering for the floor. Badging is all shiny and correct, and the paint is nice and deep on the silver. 14-inch RS rally wheels in body matching dark gray with stainless trim rings are seen on all 4 corners, and are wrapped in nearly new 205/70R14's all around.
Interior
Much like showroom, extremely clean surfaces starting with the swing of the doors revealing the door panels utilizing smooth padded vinyl in deep dark gray, molded plastic in excellent condition which houses the door pull, power windows, power locks and side view mirror joystick. Slipping inside we are greeted with mid 1980's square and rectangle design for the dash, all functioning controls, and nicely set up for ease of operation. Cruise control is noted, along with the Sport Gauge package, A/C, and a Kenwood AM/FM/CD player is fitting neatly into a square panel. The seats are split bench style and are nice and wide. The cushions are donned with fancy black and light gray tweed broadcloth with smooth gray vinyl bolsters. In the center is a gray vinyl fold down armrest for extra comfort. Like new black carpeting floods the floors, and above is a fuzzy broadcloth headliner also in gray.
Drivetrain
Under the hood is a 305ci LG4 V8 engine with a 4-barrel carburetor on top. On the back is a 200R4 4-speed automatic transmission with a 10-bolt Positraction 2.56 gear ratio rear axle. Nice and clean and well detailed under this hood!
Undercarriage
A little surface rust and a smattering of patina are seen on the black factory undercoated floor pans, rockers and frame. The suspension also has some slight light surface rust but otherwise unremarkable. Independent coil spring suspension for the front, and a 4 link with coil springs on back, along with power disc brakes for the front and power drums for the rear. A stock style single exhaust system is on and appears nearly new from the catalytic converter rearward.
Drive-Ability
She fired right up and I was off to the Classic Auto Mall Test track. Here this car did very well, with plenty of power from the 305ci LG4, handled like it was on “rails” and steamed along smoothly at cruising speed. All comfy for the interior and all functioning.
A nice silver and gray clean example with the not oft seen Conquista option and soft comfy black and gray tweed seat. A clean rubber lined bed, and good two-tone paint in shades of gray. A worker and a cruiser, and a car like ride all around. Let this one show you “The Way”…Adios.
