1966 Ford Mustang Coupe
Advertisements became popular reminders of the Mustang's youthful spirit, such as one featuring two mature adults sitting in a new Mustang with the words, “Youth is a wonderful thing. What a crime to waste it on children.” It was the car to have it you were seeking the fountain of youth. The 1966 Ford Mustang was the car to have if you were looking to win over your neighbor or hit the road for fun and adventure. It was also a must-have for enthusiastic drivers and car enthusiasts who simply liked to drive.
A consigner noted “drivers' car” a couple of phases of restoration have made this car and interesting combination, as well as a reliable 1966 car. And did I mention a good looker?
Exterior
Candy Apple Red replaces original white. Also 2 new rear quarter panels, and floor panels were completely replaced. GT fog lights were added at this time and have their own separate switch. Remaining metal is mostly straight, and chrome and badging appear very fine. Spoked wheels on all fours. Rear trunk gaps are good, and exterior lighting is all functional.
Interior
Original buckets with horizontal tufting in the center and smooth bolsters show in good shape, as does the rear bench in the same pattern. Red carpet slightly faded but in nice condition covers the floors. The dash is original Mustang configuration for 1966 Model year, is black fields with a red surround. Red metal below and padded red vinyl on top for safety. A new wood steering wheel and upgraded retro audio AM/FM Cassette and kick panel speakers,,,Rock On! All instruments work, and the heater has a new heating element. Also different from original a manual choke is seen, for much easier starting.
Drivetrain
Replacing the original engine, a 289ci V8 sits comfortably in a clean engine bay. Attached to the back is a Borg Warner 4-speed manual transmission.
Undercarriage
Some surface rust can be seen, but this is typical of a “driver car”. Power brakes are installed, and a rebuilt front end with rocker arms and bushings.
Not every car can be a numbers matching garage queen that is rarely enjoyed. If you are seeking a concours restored car that you want as a “queen” this is not your car. If you are an early Mustang aficionado one to drive your classic car. A wonderful V8 with updated transmission, then this is your pony…uhhh, Mustang!
