Camaro Z28

Description

1996 Chevrolet Camaro Z28

The Z28 code was the RPO code they used when the 67 Camaro was to be ordered with an engine that met the specs of the SCCA Racing. That engine had to have less than 305 cubic inches. So, Chevy took a 327 block, installed a 283 crank, and got a 302.

For consignment a 1996 Chevrolet Camaro with that all important Z28 RPO code. This one with 139K miles has been upgraded with some performance parts and shows well. A clean Carfax and well maintained, just a few areas of some wear, but overall good!

Exterior
From tip to toe, top to bottom, and everywhere in between, we see a 2013 respray of Bright Red and looking just fab! Integrated bumpers, body matching, front and rear melt into the steel body panels which are straight and present well with only a few inclusions and a crack in the driver's rear quarter panel. A few strategically placed pieces of black trim are seen throughout, and add just a bit of downplay to the red. Fog lights are upfront to light the way. Up top are 2 removable tinted glass roof panels and just behind the B pillar is a curved greenhouse glass enclosure for the rear passengers, as well as any of their gear to store in the back. On the back, the curvaceous spoiler runs the width of the arched rear, and large taillights peek out from underneath as well as auxiliary backup lights for added safety at night. Factory 16-inch saw blade style wheels are on all 4 corners.

Interior
Black leather is covering all the seating surfaces which present high back buckets upfront, and a small rear 2 plus 2 bench. These are in good condition with some wear off on the drivers' bolsters. Some wide stitched areas are covering the inserts and smooth overstuffed leather is on the bolsters. The door panels that cozy up to the seats are a mix of leather and molded plastic and blend right into the dash and seats when the doors are closed, and you are in ready to go mode. We see power windows, power locks, and A/C. Black carpet floods the floors, and the dash is all original and all clean as a whistle. A digital readout Kenwood aftermarket AM/FM/CD/MP3 player is replacing the factory radio, and all is just wonderful with the interior world.

Drivetrain
Under the hood is the correct 5.7 liter LT-1 V8 with fuel injection to feed it the go juice and an upgraded performance MTD distributor and cold air intake to handle the air and spark. A T56 6-speed manual transmission with a newer clutch slave cylinder is on back, 10-bolt 3.42 rear axle. Per our consignor's notes a new hydraulic roller cam and lifter was installed in 2017, the AC compressor was replaced in 2019, a new clutch, pressure plate, throwout bearing and starter was installed in 2020, and a new radiator was installed in 2021.

Undercarriage
Showing some of its age and mileage, surface rust coats the suspension and driveshaft/differential. Floor pans have been treated to a rust proofing in black so there is no rust for the floor pans or rockers. Some of the front section of the framing and floor pans have not been sprayed and remain in the factory Bright Red. Power disc brakes are on all around and for the exhaust we note a Borla cat back system. Giving the essential Z28 ride and handling is an independent front suspension with coil spring and in the rear a torque arm and coil spring arrangement. The suspension has been lowered to improve handling and competition shocks and struts have been added all the way around.

Drive-Ability
She fires right up and runs smoothly. As noted, this LT-1 5.7 Liter V8 engine can take you from zero to 60 in a flash with nice solid handling, and quick braking. All functions were in working order for this test drive, but we did note the radio has lost its programming feature.

An aero version of the former and current iteration of the Camaro muscle car. Looking very clean, just a few minor areas of wear, tons of routine maintenance and performance upgrade performed during our consignor's ownership period make for a mechanically sound piece of modern muscle. The price is definitely right…Come On Down!
