“It still looks like a Mustang but it's the toughest one yet.” - Car and Driver, November 1968

The Car and Driver writers continued with their first reactions to the then-new Mustang offering: “Outwardly the (new Mustang) is a blend of dragster and Trans-Am sedan.” A Ford magazine ad for the launch of the redesigned put it this way: “Someone finally built a better Mustang.”

Clearly, the new Mustang was a major introduction.

Offered here is a restored '1970 Ford Mustang SportsRoof (fastback) in Grabber Blue over black. Refreshed and rebadged as a Mach 1 Tribute, the current odometer reading is 63,005 miles, or fewer than 1,250 miles per-year on average since new.

The exterior non-metallic Grabber Blue paint shows outstanding gloss and consistency. The color is highly desirable and a perfect choice for the professional respray (including door jambs, the underside of the trunk lid, and the hood), and the results are impressive. The finish perfectly highlights the body's flowing lines and forward-sloping front end. The gloss-black, wide hood-stripe (with “351” graphic) makes a serious performance statement. Correct “Mach 1”-branded, finned rocker-panel trim has been added. A matte-black finish on the lower-front, Mach 1-style spoiler, front grille, and rear-window louvers is a perfect complement. The rear-deck spoiler is finished in gloss black. There is no damage, dings, or dents on any sheet-metal panel. Chrome trim is likewise excellent across front and rear bumpers, grille trim, window trim, and door handles, with very light patina. (To best assess the quality of the paint and trim finishes, be sure to view the close-up photographs of the car in the accompanying gallery.) Period-correct badging, including the script “Mustang” front-fender emblems, circular sailplane emblem, Mustang logo on the fuel-filler cap, and “Mach 1” rear-deck graphic is properly in place for the tribute. All lighting lenses, including on the twin, in-the-grille headlights (a change from '69) and the six taillights, are clear and uncracked. Cabin glass is free of flaws. Factory 5-spoke, 15-inch, styled steel wheels in perfect condition (with Mustang logo center caps) are mounted with BFGoodrich® Radial T/A, 275/60 raised-white-letter tires.

Inside, the stock horizontally pleated, ventilated-black-vinyl-upholstered front bucket seats (with red vinyl trim stripe) and folding rear-bench seat are in excellent condition; the seating surfaces are free of damage or serious indications of wear. A horizontal door-panel design includes woodgrain-trim (with Mustang running-horse emblem). Window cranks are door-mounted. A riveted-wood-rim 3-spoke, chrome-trimmed, sport steering wheel (with Mustang logo center cap) frames four circular instrument openings. The padded black dash with woodgrain is free of damage and includes the analog clock and a “Mach 1” emblem facing the front passenger. (Please view the close-up photography in the gallery to assess the Mustang's interior-surface condition.) The center stack includes an upgraded Alpine® audio head unit, with heat and ventilation slide-level controls below. The original T-lever shifter for the automatic transmission is mounted on the woodgrain-trimmed console, which also includes a storage compartment beneath the center armrest. Black cabin carpeting is in place throughout, as is a black headliner (in undamaged condition but showing some looseness). The car's trunk floor is clean with proper vinyl matting in place. The same matting covers the spare tire.

Opening the hood reveals the 351-cubic-inch (Cleveland) Ford V8 (wearing correct Ford-blue block paint). The pristine engine bay has thankfully not been treated with shine-enhancing sprays. Finned valve covers bear the “Powered by Ford” identification while the stock air cleaner assembly features the stock, Ford-blue, original-style paint. Shock-tower supports in black are properly mounted, as are all components; all hoses and wiring are correctly routed. Viewed from below, the chassis is complete, and undamaged. The full-length, properly routed performance exhaust system with crossover pipe is a focal point.

The car's original build and information tags remain as mounted at the factory. A State of Kansas assigned-VIN emblem is riveted in place. The sale includes the car's original owner's manual.

While the more than 155 high-definition photographs and the short walk-around-and-startup video available on the GarageKeptMotors website showcase this '70 Mustang Fastback in detail from every angle, including from below, we expect and encourage in-person inspections at our Grand Rapids, Michigan showroom. Please call to arrange an appointment in advance as our showroom is not open to the public. And feel free to get in touch anytime by phone or email if you have questions.

Classic Mustangs of the muscle-car era never lose their appeal. Properly cared for and tastefully refreshed, this Grabber Blue '70 fastback is a perfect example of that. A period 2-page Ford magazine advertisement was headlined simply: “Power seekers: Your Mustang is ready.”

True then, true now.
