2004 Ford Mustang GT

The launch of the 1994 model year of the Ford Mustang was arguably the moment that the vehicle propelled itself into the era of "modern cars". After years of anticipation that had fans eagerly awaiting the next generation, the fourth generation, internally known by the code SN95, finally debuted. The shift away from the boxiness of the Foxbody marked a deliberate transformation into contemporary design. The 1999 model year brought about a mid-cycle refresh just in time for the new millennium. The 1999-2004 Mustangs are referred to as "New Edge'', which was Ford's global design language during that time period. Though still technically SN95 models, some refer to them solely as much.

A final year New Edge 2004 Mustang GT with lots of recent maintenance work, having new brakes, pads, rotors, an oil change, new tie rod ends and freshly PA inspected, this car is ready to provide years of joy and service for its new owner.

Presentable black paint, with fog lamps, rear decklid spoiler, a sporty hood scoop, and a very raked windscreen have this car moving fast forward when it's standing still. 17” anthracite colored Bullitt wheels adorn all 4 corners, and these are wrapped by P245/45ZR17 rubber which are almost new. The rear quarter panel scoops, and the iconic mustang side cove are exemplary of speed. A lesser quality of paint work is noted on the hood and rear spoiler with the latter showing clear coat peeling. Overall, a nice body, however, normal wear and tear is evident with scrapes, dings and the beginnings of invasive rust on the driver's rear 1/4 panel.

Articulated sport gray leather bucket seats flank a center console that has a spacious glove box/armrest, cup holder, and the shifter for the 5-speed manual transmission. These seats are showing some wear particularly in the driver's outer bolster which shows tearing and separation of the stitching at the piping. Conveniences include power windows, power mirrors, power locks, a leather wrapped steering wheel with remote controls for easy to use cruise control. Factory air, premium Mach 460 sound with a cassette/CD changer radio will make it that you'll never want to get out! A twin arched dash harkens back to earlier generation Mustangs and displays well with multi-gauge instrument cluster in front of the driver and the glove box and airbag in front of the passenger. Gray carpeting floods the floors and is protected by black deep tread rubber mats.

The 4.6Liter SOHC V8 engine with a Tremec T3650 5-speed manual transmission is seen within the near perfect engine bay. This mill is fuel injected and fuel efficient to boot all the while making 260 tire shredding horses. This combination sends power back to a Ford 8.8" rear axle weighing in with 3.27 TracLok gearing.

The usual surface rust which is unremarkable and typical for an 04 Mustang is noted, however, extreme invasive rust is present on the rear section of the rear unibody rails and rear crossmember. These need to be repaired before the car can safely be driven. Rack and pinion steering, power disc brakes all around, and a handling suspension are seen. Last but not least a factory exhaust system snakes its way from the engine to the rear of the car and throws off a nice throaty sound when you goose it.

This was a dual test driver car, and my cohort crack decoder and mechanical confidant took the wheel for our cruise. Here we experienced all working functions, smooth acceleration, quick bias free stopping, and overall tight responsive feel and look from this GT coupe. We found all functions to be operational and the drive-ability suffers no ill effects from the invasive rust below.

This 'stang, which is an aero look but still harkening back to its roots with the triple taillights, inset round interior gauges, and hockey stick coves on the doors still looks modern even though it is approaching 20 years of age. Some structural repairs are needed but otherwise this is a nice galloping pony to take you off into the sunset.
