Description

2004 Ford Mustang GT Convertible

The fourth generation Ford Mustang was an automobile produced by Ford for the 1994 through 2004 model years. For 1994 the Ford Mustang underwent its first major redesign in fifteen years, being introduced in November 1993 and launching on December 9, 1993. The design, code named "SN-95" by Ford, was based on an updated version of the Fox platform, the final Ford vehicle underpinned with this platform. It featured styling by Bud Magaldi that incorporated some stylistic elements from the classic Mustangs.

The last year of this generation of the venerable Mustang, this SN-95 style convertible, painted with some purple flames fading into black, 17 inch Bullitt wheels, medium parchment leather interior and a stout 4.6 liter SOHC EFI V8 to power you down the highways and byways. Pony up and put the top down we are going to make some purple rain.

Exterior
In keeping with tradition, Mustang designers carry over several design cues on every generation they produce, and this one is no exception. With a more rounded design, shades of the ones that came before them with recognizable headlights now smoothed into the front end, and the central grille with the galloping horse badge in the center. Do you know why the horse is facing to the onlookers left? Because the designer of it was left-handed and it was easier to draw! A long hood starts out being bathed in purple which flames out and turns to black as we move our eyes rearward. A central scoop melts into the body matching front glass swept back support and its clear glass. From this top of the swept back windscreen point, the canvas takes over and presents in nice black, no tears or blemishes and a clear glass rear window. Being power activated, it is an easy up and down. Doors with well minded gaps have another earlier cue in the hockey stick cove which is in the beginnings of the rear quarter on this model. The color has gone totally black at this point. On the back is a small but effective spoiler, and a now integrated curved trio of rear taillights, (think 1964-1/2!), with a large rear neoprene bumper dual exhaust and a large MUSTANG badge finishes off the back. 5 spoke Bullitt wheels with a central galloping horse badge are on all 4 corners and this completes our tour of the exterior.
Interior
Nicely curved molded door panels house the power window, power lock and power mirror toggles and controls and have a built-in speaker to boot. The parchment shows up on these panels along with some darker tan and even a brown panel for the buttons. Nicely aged, slightly smudged parchment bucket seats have just the right amount of slight creases and folds like easily aged leather tends to do. These have high backs and rounded headrests for extra protection, as well as an embroidered black galloping pony. The 2 plus 2 rear seat is in the back and has a surprising amount of room, making the climb back there worthwhile for the ride. Tan carpet floods the floors and is nicely cleaned, and in the center a console runs up to the dash. At their meeting point is a curvaceous panel which houses the AM/FM/CD radio with equalizer temp controls and A/C venting, rises gracefully to form dual eyebrows for the instruments and glove box/airbag dash. Dark and light brown are used here as well. The instruments are a single panel with analog gauges which reside nicely under half of that curved dash top. Also, a shout out to the trunk which is very clean and covered with its original felting.

Drivetrain
Under that scooped hood is an original 4.6 liter Single Overhead Cam V8. This mill has EFI on top and a Tremec 3650 5-speed manual transmission on back. Rear wheels are driven by a Ford 8.8 inch 3.27 Trac-Loc rear axle. Engine condition is showing patina and some corrosion on various surfaces and bolt ons.

Undercarriage
A coating of heavier surface rust is seen on some suspects like the rear axle drive shaft, and front part of the pumpkin. Also, the forward part of the exhaust has this rust but remains solid. The floor pans and unibody remain rust free and even have a bit of shine to them. The aluminum pan for the bottom end of the V8 is slightly corroded. Mostly typical for an aged Ford product, all structurally sound. Power disc brakes are on all 4 corners, and a note to that Cherry bomb exhaust.

Drive-Ability
This car started right up and I flipped the top down and it was off to the sunny test track. Here it had nice acceleration, a throaty sound, and good handling and braking. It is a comfortable car to drive, and with all functions working, it could handle a long cruise with ease and comfort.

If you've been looking for an entry level classic take a close look at this 2004 version. Purple to black flamed, 4.6 liter, 5-speed manual, and convertible. Insert key, turn, go! Enjoy this purple Chevy driving people eater. I know I watched too much TV when I was younger, but it does make for an interesting description!
