Description

1988 Chevrolet Camaro IROC Z Convertible

The IROC race series invited champions from all walks of racing, including NASCAR, CART, Le Mans, and even NHRA. No matter who won, they were always driving an IROC Camaro and as they say in the biz, win on Sunday, sell on Monday.

This IROC version of the 1988 Camaro is in full IROC street garb. Special painted badging, a low-slung windshield, some fairings, canvas convertible version and a powerful 5.0 Liter tuned port fuel injection engine were just a few of the features that were added to this version of the Camaro, only a 2-owner car with 41,673 consignor documented original miles.

Exterior
Gray paint covers the straight steel body panels, fairings, and front built in chin spoiler of the car. Just above the rockers is a dual black and stainless trimming the wraps entirely around the car. Black trimmings surround the glass and are also on the door handles. IROC Z badging is also on the doors and creates a ribbed fade from gray to white. Black canvas is the convertible top and just a small tear is above the driver's side window. On the back a small spoiler trims off the trunk lid, and on the black of the car are the iconic Camaro shaped taillights that wrap around to the rear quarters. Silver polished 5 spoke 16-inch Camaro rims are attached to all 4 corners and noted as “front” and “rear” wheels because of different offsets. All is just fine with this car's exterior condition.

Interior
A snazzy gray and black padded tweed bowls you over when you swing the doors. A smooth vinyl armrest with a long pull arm within this tweed as is a black plastic panel for the door actuator and sport rear view mirrors power buttons. The seats in bucket configuration for the front, also use the tweed for the front inserts and upper back panels, with the remainder of the seats being gray nicely aged leather. As an added texture/color, dark gray trims the backs and headrest sides. The rear 2 plus 2 bench also is in the same pattern. Think smoking jacket and a favorite leather billiard room chair! A black console and dash house all the critical instrumentation, as well as climate controls, radio and automatic shift lever. Power windows are installed. Power locks, power steering, power brakes, power toggle mirrors and a power driver's seat are working and are great conveniences with this sports car. Clean fade free gray carpeting floods the floors and this is one tasteful comfortable interior.

Drivetrain
The Tuned Port Injection 5.0L gives plenty of smooth power. EFI feeds the fuel and on back a 4-speed 700R4 automatic transmission with overdrive has been optioned on. All this attached to a 10-bolt 2.73 posi rear axle.

Undercarriage
The floor pans are solid, as is the unibody construction. Slight patina for the suspension which consists of independent coil springs for the front, and a torque arm and coil springs for the back. Power rear drum brakes are on and power front discs can be seen.

Drive-Ability
A quick starter, and smooth idle until the warmup was afforded to me. I slipped into the tweed and leather interior and was grabbed by the seats. A shift into drive and I was off like a prom dress, with great acceleration, smooth shifting, and good handling on the test track. She's able to cruise at highway speeds easily, and air was blowing cold. I had the top down for my test, and it was a pleasant experience with plenty of airflow from the outside and the top manually operating smoothly.

Except for the badging, this car is disguised as a mild mannered everyday 1988 Chevrolet Camaro. A look under the hood, as well as the IROC status option package L03, makes it anything but mild mannered. All in very good condition, this car is a definite goer, but can also be viewed at any car show you may want to drive it to. Go ahead, get in and turn it over…well the engine, keep the wheels down on the ground, although they have a tendency to spin when you get goosey with your boot!
