“Firebird and Trans Am sales soared during this period, and hit a phenomenal peak in 1979.” – TheTruthAboutCars website, August 2010 - Full article online here: https://www.thetruthaboutcars.com/2010/08/curbside-classic-1979-pontiac-firebird-trans-am/

The respected automotive writer, Paul Niedermeyer, continued: “Once a thriving species during the golden performance car era, it was all but wiped out by that great natural calamity, the 1974 energy crisis. Challenger, Barracuda, Mustang, Javelin; even its stablemate the Camaro Z28; by 1975 they were all extinct or in deep hibernation. Only the Trans Am hung in there, and then just by a whisker, or a feather, in this case. But Pontiac's risky gamble to press on against the odds had a huge payoff: not only did Trans Am sales explode by the end of the decade, but it came to symbolize the whole genre. Rarely has one car so dominated the American public's awareness: in the second half of the seventies, the Trans Am became the icon of the American performance car....”

Offered here is a near-mint-condition, very-low-mileage, survivor 1979 Trans Am in silver over black. Purchased new on Christmas Eve at Elhart Pontiac in Holland, Michigan for the first owner's wife, the car has traveled just over 20,688 miles in all, a per-year average of fewer than 500 miles. The Trans Am spent its life in Byron Center, Michigan. Original sales documentation and the original title are included. The outstanding condition of the car, inside and out, is a tribute to owner pride, respect for the car, and attention to regular maintenance through the years.

The condition of the body panels and the metallic silver paint is excellent: free of damage, scrapes, and discoloration. Body-panel alignment (including fender flares) is similarly proper. Black decals—notably the “screaming chicken” on the hood, but also the black-and-red “Trans Am” identification on the rear deck and front fenders as well as the “TA 6.6” on the shaker hood—all retain their factory-new appearance. (To best assess the quality of the paint and trim finishes, be sure to view the close-up photographs of the car in the accompanying gallery.) The twin blacked-out front grilles and center Pontiac emblem are likewise free of damage; even the “ghosted” 4-wheel-disc identification remains on the door handles. Chrome window trim is in excellent condition. Cabin glass and all lighting lenses are clear; lift-out glass roof panels are pristine. Lattice-design, 15-inch factory alloy wheels (with Firebird-logo center caps) are mounted with raised-white-letter Uniroyal® Steel Belted Radial raised-white-letter 225/70 tires. These are the tires that originally came on the car.

Inside, seating surfaces are upholstered in black velour fabric that has been extremely well-maintained; tattersall-patterned cushions and horizontally pleated backrests are beautifully styled. No significant wear is present, and absolutely no rips or tears on the front buckets or rear 2-passenger bench. Door trim, the dashboard, and the console are all in black. The original black sport steering wheel frames a dashboard accented with turned-metal trim that surrounds both the tachometer and speedometer, as well as an array of stock engine-monitoring gauges. All instrument lenses are clear; all graphic markings on instruments and other control surfaces are crisp and un-worn. The stock AM-FM push-button radio remains mounted; slide-levers control heat, ventilation, and air conditioning. The console-mounted shift lever for the 4-speed manual transmission wears a knob showing the shift pattern and a Pontiac logo; the power-window buttons are also located on the console. Black carpeting (protected by matching carpet mats) covers the floors.

Under the hood, the 6.6-liter V8 lurks beneath its “shaker” hood air intake. Engine-block paint is the original Pontiac shade of turquoise. All related components retain original finishes and are properly located. The engine bay is spotlessly clean. Viewed from below, the car's chassis—including the full-length, factory dual exhaust system—is complete and free of damage. There is no evidence of too-aggressive or abusive driving styles. Only expected light surface rust is present on untreated metal. (The car's chassis was Ziebart®-coated when new.)

The original build and identification tags remain as mounted at the factory.
