“The Sleeper Awakes” – Period Chevy Nova SS magazine advertisement headline

The Nova SS advertising copy hailed: “Up and at 'em! … a throbbing engine note… this one's no imitation… a standard 300-hp V8… special suspension… an extra tough clutch… 7” wide wheels… power disc brakes… Chevy Nova SS… the car that woke up swinging.” Clearly, the folks at Chevrolet were celebrating the way folks had been making their more basic Novas into performance “sleepers” with this new “SS” that came from the factory ready to perform from day one.

Offered here is a 1970 Chevy Nova SS in red over black with a black vinyl top. Showing 59,792 miles currently, the car has traveled just 1,150 miles per-year on average since new. A true factory Super Sport that's been professionally restored to a very high standard, including rebuilding its numbers-matching V8 and maintaining its numbers-matching Muncie® 4-speed, the well documented Nova SS is a near-perfect representative of Seventies performance, properly maintained and ready for show… and go.

The professional quality of the red exterior paint application is evident in the even and complete application (including door sills, door frames, and underside of the hood and trunk), virtually perfect gloss, and deeply reflective color. The way the twin chrome hood louvers stand out against the smooth red paint is particularly satisfying. In addition, the “sleeper” character of the Nova's largely unadorned body panels and 2-door non-hardtop styling is nicely brought to life by the bright red paint. (To best assess the quality of the paint and trim finishes, be sure to view the close-up photographs of the car in the accompanying gallery.) Chrome trim surrounding the “SS” blackout grille and the chrome front bumper are in excellent condition. Indeed, all body chrome trim--the hood louvers, bowtie-embossed side mirrors, cabin-glass surrounds, vinyl-top trim, “SS” rear-valance blackout panel and taillight surround, and rear bumper--shows excellent shine free of all but minimal patina from age. Stock, perfectly finished, red-painted, 14-inch steel wheels (with chrome trim rings and chrome bowtie-embossed hubcaps) are mounted with Hankook® Optimo H724 blackwall tires to complete the period-correct, properly "sleeper" look.

Inside, the black textured-vinyl upholstery on the foldable front bucket seats and rear bench employs an attractive staggered-width, vertical pleated design. Black door trim is enhanced with woodgrain, also used on the rear-cabin side walls. Black cabin carpeting is protected by GM-branded rubber floor mats in all four seating positions. An “SS”-branded, 2-spoke steering wheel frames the horizontal 120-mph speedometer, with a smaller 5,000-rpm-redline tachometer and a clock incorporated in the cluster. Four additional engine-monitoring square gauges are incorporated forward on the center console similar to the Camaro layout. The factory Delco® AM push-button radio and vertical slide-lever controls for heat and ventilation are located to the right of the steering wheel. A sole “Nova” emblem faces the front passenger on the otherwise unadorned black dash. The shift lever for the Muncie 4-speed manual transmission is located on the console. Factory-installed power brakes and power steering are in place.

Under the hood, the rebuilt, numbers-matching 350-cubic-inch, 4-barrel-carbureted V8 displays an entirely stock appearance under its black-painted air cleaner with sticker advertising “350 Turbo Fire/300 Horsepower.” Orange engine-block paint and zinc-finish brake booster are also correct. Wiring and hoses are properly routed, and the entire engine bay is perfectly clean. Viewed from below, the chassis is straight, undamaged, and very clean. The full-length dual-exhaust system with chrome exhaust tips, and the lower sides of the engine and transmission are obvious focal points.

The car's original build and identification tags remain mounted. The sale includes the Protect-o-Plate and other original documentation.

While the more than 150 high-definition photographs and the short walk-around-and-startup video available on the GarageKeptMotors website showcase this '70 Nova SS in detail from every angle, including from below, we expect and encourage in-person inspections at our Grand Rapids, Michigan showroom. Please call to arrange an appointment in advance as our showroom is not open to the public. And feel free to get in touch anytime by phone or email if you have questions.

With the “muscle era” of street-performance, modified automobiles still running hot in 1970, Chevrolet's decided to celebrate all that with its own “awakened sleeper.” That bit of automotive history is perfectly captured in this red Nova SS, and it's sure to cause a real stir among bowtie enthusiasts wherever they gather.
