Description

1973 Chevrolet Camaro Z-28

Dubbed "Super Hugger", the second-generation Camaro was an all-new car with its basic mechanical layout familiar and engineered much like its predecessor with a unibody structure utilizing a front subframe, A-arm and coil spring front suspension, and rear leaf springs. The chassis and suspension of the second generation were refined in both performance and comfort; base models offered significant advances in sound-proofing, ride isolation, and road-holding. Extensive experience Chevrolet engineers had gained racing the first-generation led directly to advances in second-generation Camaro steering, braking, and balance. High-performance configurations were initially available, but the marketplace changed as the 1970s progressed with fuel crisis, higher insurance rates, and tightening emissions regulations.

Cars are only original once and they only have one original owner so when an original owner, original condition car comes to roost in our hallowed halls it's something to talk about! For consignment, an original owner, original condition 1973 Camaro Z28 in stunning Dark Brown Metallic, some snappy white stripes, a cozy Saddle interior and correct Z28 wheels. Add in all the service records from day 1, the original vehicle inspection report, the original cash receipt from the time of purchase, the original invoice and build ticket, along with service manuals, the owner's manual, and a 1973 Camaro Brochure and we have a sure-fire winner.

Exterior
With all its steel panels bathed in consignor-stated original Dark Brown Metallic showing some dents and dings, a full length thin front bumper with small bumperettes, oval shaped egg crate grille, Z28 badge and single headlight flanking on either side, it is original as they come even down to the chin spoiler hanging below. A long hood backs up to a windshield trimmed in black. Moving to the back, long wide doors have nicely minded gaps, a thin chrome trim strip and more chrome trimmings for the glass in them albeit missing the upper window trim pieces. The long gracefully sloping rear glass and deck has another rear spoiler attached, and the round taillights framed by a nearly perfect condition bumper below. Dual wide white painted stripes are racing rearward from the hood, skip the roof, then continue on over the trunk lid and rear spoiler, ending at the rear panel where the tail lighting is. 15" factory correct dark gray Z28 wheels hold the car off the ground and are wrapped in BF Goodrich Radial TA raised white letter rubber.

Interior
Saddle plastic and vinyl shows nicely covering the door panels, and all is looking very good with only minor scratching of the plastic on the tops of the doors, with shiny handles and a bar actuator buried in the door. Slipping inside we note an original dash with all factory gauges mounted within a walnut burl panel. All knobs, pulls and slides are original as is the padded Saddle dash top and lower black plastic section of the dash. A shiny chrome Camaro emblem in your grandmother's script resides on the glove box door and is looking just fab. In the center is the factory installed AM/FM radio and just below is the chrome shaft, Hurst T handle shifter which grows from the console-less center hump. Original Saddle vinyl buckets, nice and clean are now in front, and in back a 2 plus 2 bench with a Saddle carpeted hump running through the seat portion of this bench. More Saddle carpeting is flooding all the floor space, and up top is a perforated headliner in Saddle. A black 4 spoke steering wheel and a black bowtie badge in the horn area shows off nicely.

Drivetrain
A lift of the long undulating hood and we are met with a numbers matching 350ci V8 capable of 245hp. On top is the correct and original Rochester Quadrajet carburetor. A pair of aluminum ribbed valve covers give us some bling as does the chrome air cleaner lid. We note that the smog equipment has been removed but is available with the purchase. Attached to the back of this mill is a numbers matching Muncie M21 4-speed manual transmission while a CG coded 3.73 positraction 10-bolt rear axle puts the power to the ground. All nice, tidy, and buttoned up.

Undercarriage
Up in the air we see a well preserved undercarriage. Only minor surface rust on the usual suspects: suspension components and around a few of the spot welds. No invasive rust is seen and the floors still retain their factory applied paint. A new dual exhaust system has been installed along with a stock style replacement muffler. Leaf springs on the rear and an independent coil spring set up gives the ride while power disc brakes are seen on the front and power drums for the rear. We do note power steering along with a new set of calipers on the front brakes.

Drivability
My crack decoder and I agreed to a foot race to see who got to wheel this original muscle car. Luckily for me I tied his bootlaces together under the guise of picking up change in the parking lot. The mill in this Super Hugger fired right up and I was off to the test track while leaving my decoder in a cloud of dust and gravel. On the track this car performed well with good acceleration, nice handling, a comfortable ride, and excellent bias free braking. A great test drive and I'm in love with the abundance of original Saddle in the interior.

Rarely do we here at the Classic Auto Mall get all original cars in and it's even rarer to get one from the original owner. With all its documentation dating back to day one, meticulously recorded service records, and showing about as original as they come this car won't last long. You deserve a car this good!
