Nice Older Respray/327ci V8 Bored .030/2-Speed Auto/Hounds Tooth Interior
1968 Chevrolet Camaro RS Coupe
RS in Camaro speak stands for Rally Sport which is available on all trim levels. It includes hidden headlights, and reverse lights below the bumper, as well as other trim options that could be had. It was basically an appearance package, although you could have an RS/SS package which included a more powerful engine and the trimmings of an RS.
For consignment an RS coupe that was resprayed about 15 years ago and still retains its sparkle. A rebuilt 327ci engine bored .030 over, period correct traction bars, and the houndstooth inserts for the chairs, welcome back to 1968.
Exterior
Blue is the new addition to this otherwise original badging, brightwork, bumpers, and top. Some overspray/orange peel is noted on the doors below the belt line but otherwise presents nicely. Silver stripes run the length and add plenty of Sport to the rally option. RS option hidden headlights are functioning and are fairly well aligned with the grille. Stock Chevrolet Motor Company rally wheel trim and hubcaps are framed by Goodrich radial Invicta black wall tires all around. The RS gas cap is planted firmly in the center of the rear panel. Also seen are nicely preserved and shiny trimmings around the wheel wells and rockers.
Interior
Houndstooth broadcloth inserts are surrounded by smooth black vinyl bolsters for these throwback seats which are very groovy looking. A center console races through the seats and up to the dash. Included within this console is a storage box, and airplane throttle like gear shift lever. The console also has wood appliqué on the top. This wood works its way upward to where the radio and temp sliders are located in the center of the dash. Prior to getting up to the radio, is a trio of aftermarket gauges mounted in the “crease” and these are in a chromed panel. Deep round angled analog gauges create the gauge cluster in front of a padded smaller rally steering wheel with a tachometer attached to the column. A matching houndstooth insert motif bench seat in the rear completes the seating arrangement. All seats are in very good condition. Black carpet in good clean condition is on the bottom and a nice tight headliner in light gray is up top.
Drivetrain
A GM orange/red block and intake manifold has shiny chromed valve covers and a chromed air cleaner holder atop and is showing a correct 327ci V8 form. The consignor states that during the rebuild a .030 overbore was snuck in. This engine has a 4-barrel Edelbrock carburetor on top, and fossils go through an Edelbrock intake manifold. A 2-speed correct Powerglide automatic transmission is behind this mill and it throws power rearward to a 10-bolt 3.08 posi rear axle. Very nice presentation under this hood for this RS with headers and plenty of engine bling to show off when you look at it.
Undercarriage
Underside is fully restored, and no rust is present. Drum brakes are all around and a dual Flowmaster exhaust system is seen all in good condition. Independent coil springs for the front and leaf springs with period correct traction bars are on back. Looking all good underneath, just like the topside.
Drive-Ability
A good driver, quick starter, smooth shifter, and some good grabby brakes. The car rode smoothly, and the interior was spacious. When it started it came to like with a mighty roar, and the sound out of this car's exhaust is exhilarating. The horn was a bit lesser as it did not work.
A 1st generation pony car, completely restored, with an RS option package. All surfaces interior and exterior are good to go, and in good working condition. Noteworthy is that the correct drivetrain is intact. A check back in time reveals that all advertising money went into the SS. Hence a beautiful option RS was somewhat ignored, creating a lesser seen Camaro and seen right here at Classic Auto Mall. This Camaro has it all…
