1965 Ford Mustang Coupe
When introduced at the 1964 World's Fair, the Ford Mustang began the era of the “pony car”. Named not for its title “Mustang” but for ushering in a class of American Muscle cars, that were affordable sporty coupes with long hoods, and short rear decks. Wildly popular, the Mustang design flew off the showroom floors. Even today current models make use of the running horse emblem that has stayed with the car for 55 years.
For consignment, a great piece of Mustang history in the form of a 1965 Mustang. Born and raised in California it has never seen a snowflake, (except California drivers… sic!). Highlights include all original glass, all factory sheet metal and a new headliner and rugs as well as a rear seat cover. Mustang! Mustang! Mustang! A wild first year pony for the riding right here in the hallowed halls of Classic Auto Mall!
Exterior
Bathed in an Ivy Green respray and a nice job of it, paint is glass like. All chrome and trimmings have a shiny polish on them as well, and all are very nice condition accents. Right down to the hockey stick cove trimming on the rear quarters, and the triple V shaped light switch style taillights and all surrounding metal. This black plate Cali car is certainly a horse of a different color but matching the original. A black like new vinyl top is now on and in full disclosure it was not original to the car but was an option that could be ordered. Standard jelly mold wheel covers and good treaded rubber are on all 4 corners.
Interior
Like new black vinyl abounds interior-wise with door panels, seats, and dash covered with it. All is in like new condition with the door panels sporting wide and thin vertical ribbed tuck and roll along with a smooth black vinyl frame border. Knobs and cranks are bright and shiny. All appears original and clean, certainly near perfect, low back buckets with more in sorted tuck and roll black vinyl, and smooth bolsters. In back a neatly buttoned up same pattern black vinyl bench stretches from door to door. Carpeting is very good and in a loop pile black. A sleek black with metal topped console streaks from back past the buckets to the dash. In the center is a trimming of ribbed aluminum which goes front as well and houses the T handle shift lever. A dual eyebrow topped dash has the iconic center horizontal speedometer flanked by a single round gauge cluster on either side, as well as some warning lights on the bottom. Fronting the dash is an original steering wheel with drilled spokes and a black plastic rim all in excellent like new condition. A new black headliner is floating above all this excitement!
Drivetrain
Flipping the hood we see the engine as it is the correct engine the car was born with…that being a 200ci Inline 6 with a single barrel carburetor, and attached is a Ford C4 3-speed automatic transmission. The engine bay is unrestored, and even the original orange painted, and slight surface rusted air cleaner covering and snout are seen with the stickers still attached. On the back is a Ford 7-1/4-inch 2.83 conventional rear axle.
Undercarriage
A clean rust-free fuel tank and muffler are attached to solid floor pans and rockers which have slight surface rust, but remain structurally sound. Even the rear underside of the fenders are good, which is typically not the case with 65's. Thank you California! Independent coil spring suspension for the front, and leaf springs for the back. Dum brakes are all around.
Drive-Ability
This classic first year 'Stang fired right up and on the test track performed like a new car. Nice smooth acceleration, quick stopping, and good handling. All functions were working together with their test driver to perform just swimmingly.
For this all nice looking and well running first year edition from the left coast presenting with no rust is no problem. A wonderful interior, shiny exterior respray and a good job of it, and the Inline 6 this one will go out the door as fast as it performed on the test track. Giddy-yup! Hitch this car to your driveway.
